Hang it out in the sun and fresh air. then wash, then hang outside again.

What about sprinkling it with baking soda and letting it sit for few hours then washing and using vinegar for a fabric softener??

I would wash it in vinegar water, then hang it out in the sunlight. It should neutrolize the odors.

For a sweatshirt or other "play clothing" washing with a strongly scented detergent and a cup of vinegar does a great job, especially if you can hang them out early and just let them stay out there all day.

For more delicate clothing..I just have them dry cleaned. It gets rid of the smell completely. Also gets rid of ingrained dust and dirt, ring around the collar, make-up stains, sweat stains etc.

After it's in good shape I can usually keep it that way without having to resort to always dry-cleaning the item.

I found this out when I bought a glorious dress at a yard sale...but that woman's perfume was both intense and unpleasant.

I'd try spraying it with Febreze first.

The vinegar didn't work, alas. I'll try the auto dish soap/baking soda this time.

    Thanks everyone!
