Default Second opinion on dental work???

I went to a new-to-me dentist reccommended by several people. It turns out that I need at least 3 crowns and some fillings re done. That is alot of work and it will end up costing me around 1500-2000 dollars for my portion. Would you get a second opinion from your old dentist? I didn't leave him because I didn't like him, the new dentist gives gas and is more child friendly for my kids.

I would absolutely get a second opinion from your original (old) dentist. Not all dentists are created equal, just as not all Dr.'s prescribe or treat the same way. If would be worth your while to check it out and then make the decision to have the work done or not done and by which dentist you choose based on both of their opinions.

I would go back to your dentist for a 2nd opinion, but I wouldn't tell them I was there to get a 2nd opinion...seeings how he was your dentist. If you saw your original dentist regularly it would seem strange to me that the new guy found all this work that needs to be done.

Thanks. I did not see the old dentist regularly-that's why I am in such bad shape. I think I will get the second opinion.....

Absolutely! I have had at least two dentists be less than truthful about the condition of my mouth, fortunately I was suspicious and did not fall for the "Your crown needs to be redone" line. I also had one dentist get mad, yell at me, and then stomp off when I asked "Are you sure it's a cavity?". Didn't go back to that one either.

Yes, I would go back to your old dentist for a second opinion. It can't hurt. I went to school with my dentist and when something comes up that I don't think is necessary I just tell him that I am not going to finance his next vacation!
