Does anyone make their own cereal mixes?
I just bought a box of "Basic 4" and I'm dismayed to find it has sugar, brown sugar, malt syrup, corn syrup, TSP and the usual chemical preservatives in it. I think I'm perfectly capable of buying organic corn flakes and adding my own puffed rice, sliced almonds, raisins, and dried cranberries. Does anyone do this? Got recipes to share?
TIA!
Judi

I don't have a particular recipe. I just buy the basic cereals that I know hubby likes and mix them with my own dehydrated fruits, nuts (bought on sale or at farmer's market and frozen), etc. that I know he likes.
Packaged "good for you" cereal is a BIG rip off!Mary

I do this quite often, but usually eat it as a snack mix rather than as my breakfast. i choose high fiber cereals that will fill me up more such as Cracklin Oat Bran, Oatmeal Squares then add dried cranberries & banana chips & DBF adds cashews. Last time i added a sweeter kashi cereal as well that I got on the cheap w/ some sales & coupons.
I take this stuff everywhere with me!

Here are a few kid ones we make some times:
1)Our version of Cocovilla ( the vanilla chocolate cereal that "talks" Snap crackle pop)
Mix equal part generic rice crispy cereal and malt of meal coco pebbles type cereal (little chocolate flakes)
2)Rice crispy treat cereal
take the generic rice crispy cereal make some rice crispy treats save some and break in to little bits/chunks mix with the plain generic rice crispy cereal.
3)Corn flakes and dried fruit makes versions of "special K" with strawberries or apricots.
4)Just Bunches or granola mixed in to cornflakes similar to honey bunches of oats.
5) frosted flakes shake a little sugar on your corn flakes before serving. Remember sugar shakers on dinner tables for this purpose from your youth?
There are also recipes on line to make things like grape nuts from scratch.

I like to mix my cereals together, get a whole new flavor with doing it that way. When my kids see me do it they laugh and make fun of me, but when I would do it for them they they would love it LOL
Thanks for sharing all the tips, going to have try them out.
