Pine Sap In Dog Fur
My lab gets so much pine sap in his fur. Often it glues pieces of his fur all the way to his skin. I have no idea how to safely remove it. His glorious coat looks moth eaten. When he sees me with scissors in hand he runs and hides. Poor thing has lost all self-respect.
All advice is greatly appreciated in advance.Last edited by Must-Stash; 06-14-2009 at 12:31 AM.

I googled it and it said baby oil........that would be much better than what I wrote earlier. (put this part in as edit)
Wonder if you couldn't put some finger nail polish remover on a cotton ball....or rag.....and CAREFULLY remove it. If you got any on his skin I would 'spot wash' it off right away with a dab of liquid soap. Is it too much sap to do that?
F. Nail polish remover and rubbing alcohol are the only things that I know that take it off and both are harsh on 'critter skin'....good luck.
Wow...other than that I am at a loss....poor thing. Any way to keep him away from the trees where he gets it?Last edited by frugalfranny; 06-14-2009 at 12:52 AM.

I searched and found that butter is the magic potion that safely and completely removes tree sap. Your supposed to rub the butter into the dogs fur working it into the tree sap matted fur. be generous. Then bathe your dog to wash it all out.

What about Avon's Skin So Soft Bath Oil. That usually works on anything. I removed stickers that had been on a chest for years with the stuff. Fleas might not like it either so it could be a win win situation. I know it keeps ants off of my hummingbird feeder. Good luck.

Butter would do it but would be messy. Would a hair dryer soften it up any?? I just envision my 3 dogs running through the house greased w/ butter w/ Dukes of Hazzard sound track playing.lol (Although pine sap-yuck)

I used butter when pitch got into my daughters' long hair. It took a few washings to get out, but worked like a charm.

We rub peanut butter into our hands for sap. I've used it on the dogs too.

As long as it's not reaching his skin and you are very careful you could try goo be gone or turpentine...but, you would have to bath him very, very well afterwards.

If it happens all the time you could look into buying a product called F&T made by Les Pooch company, I'm a dog groomer, and this is what we use.

my hubby cleans carpet for a living and one of his rules is "like removes like" and what that means is that you need a like substance to remove something else. oily/sticky needs oil to remove it. If it is gum, tar, or sap, then he would use an oil substance to remove it. Since this is on your dog and you want to use a product that would be safe for him, then I would try just plain oil (either peanut oil or mineral oil) so that it will not hurt him. Most of the other suggestions, like goo gone and such are great, but I am not sure I would use them on an animal, they are harsh and could harm him. I would suggest the oil and a small comb. Good luck.
