    Default ? for religous people

first of all my family is catholic. i don't think that really matters though. we are not very religous. long story short....my sister recently bought a 3 decker house in the city. she will not be living there but it will just become income property. the problem is there is a sort of shrine in the front hall of the first floor. a lot of statues in a corner with candles. in the yard there is a cross with cement figures facing it in a semi-circle. she doesn't want these. she doesn't want to just throw them out.....it would be sacriligous....(ignore bad spelling please...lol) what would you do? any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks!

in my neighborhood if you don't want something ya put it on the curb with free signs all over it. gone within the hour.
    11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
    credit card debt 7500
    mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
    then live on the rest!

i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

I would take it to the local Catholic church after I spoke to the Father there (what you describes sounds like a Catholic shrine of sorts) and he's indicated an interest in it. Explain what you found and if it would be of interest to the Church or some of his parishioners. If not, then I'd do the Free on the street. Someone will pick it up.

I am a 'religious' person (actually, I'm just a plain old sinner saved by grace), but truthfully, these are just objects. While I would never intentionally offend someone's beliefs, I think all of the above posters have given you legitimate options. After all, the previous 'worshippers' left it behnd.

The previous residents didn't want it, so they left it behind. Unwanted things are trash. Why would it be sacrilegious to throw out garbage?

If it's not in your belief system to pray at religious altars, it's not offensive to your god/s to destroy those altars, right? Look at what the Lord God commanded the Israelites - to utterly destroy altars to the Caananite gods and goddesses.

But, I've also been known to just toss old Bibles in the recycling can because I feel it's the ideas that are sacred, not the wood pulp and leather. YMMV!

Id ask the church if they want them then if you didnt donate them or put them to the curb. I am Catholic and yes some of us do buy reliegous statue objects- but I dont. I only have a few medalions for my braclet given to me and every year at lent-crosses palm sunday.

I'd donate the stuff to the Salvation army. I mean,, it's a charity, it's a church.. seems like it would work.

I think the trick in all of life is to do what needs to be done, with respect.

thank you all for your replies. i like donating it to a church/ or parishoners of the parish.....if not putting it for free on craigslist. but, for some reason i wouldn't just put them on the curb ....i guess we are not looking at these things as just objects. i will tell my sister of all of your responses. thanks again!!!

I'd list them on craigslist or on freecycle...there might be someone out there who would be able to use them.

I would also say have her get the house blessed. Often times folks can use religious objects for less than savory purposes. The former residents leaving these objects behind tells me that they didn't necessarily respect the ideas represented and that makes me wary. Also, as a convert from neo-paganism to Christianity I know that well intentioned folks can use them for certain rites and rituals which also can disturb things, especially if the practicioner is very new or really experienced. It's best to bless the house in these circumstances.
