How long does it take before food goes bad when the fridge gives out
That would be my fridge/freezer.
Did I ever tell you that Maytag sucks!!!
Years ago it used to be a good brand but not so much now. Our heating/cooling friend said it would die out soon and tried to fix it.
Why does it seem that old appliances can last for years upon years.
Our fridge is only four years old. What a waste of a purchase.

I would start cooking. The government is going to be doing a "cash for clunkers" type thing on appliances but it wont happen for a few more weeks. I hope you can get a new fridge at a reasonable price.

My gosh, did it go out between the first and second posts??????
If you have a freezer stick what you can in there obviously...cook up what you can...get some ziplock freezer and stick stuff in them.. guess depends on how much freezer space you have.
If you only need semi short term like a couple days get some ice bags and throw them in and don't open any more than necessary.
Yep, when rains it pours...or meltsBank of America is THE godfather of Hell with Wells Fargo running neck and neck. When the world ends the only things that will be left are cockroaches, Walmart, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. Not necessarily in that order. The order remains to be seen.

Keeping Food Safe During an Emergency
http://www.fsis.usda.gov/factsheets/...ency/index.asp
"Refrigerated food should be safe as long as power is out no more than 4 hours. Keep the door closed as much as possible. Discard any perishable food (such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers) that have been above 40 °F for 2 hours. "
FYI, Lowes was having a sale on fridges this weekend, and you can probably find other deals by checking the black friday websites ASAP.Use it up, Wear it out,
Make it do, Or do without. ~unknown

Do you have a pressure canner ? Dehyrator ? Separate freezer ?
The newer appliances are made a lot cheaper. Moters in refrigerators only last on the avearage 7 years.
Is it possible to buy a used one ? Ask a appliance repair person which brands to stay away from. I have a DIL who works for her step dad in a used appliance store. I have picked her brain more than once.
I don't see your state listed, but if it is cold where you are, maybe stick a few things outside. A insulated cooler with some bags of ice may keep things going for awhile to buy you some time to shop around.

Put the frog in pot, turn up the heat real slow, and the frog doesn't hop out. And by the time he realizes, he should , it's too late... think about it.

Ours went out earlier this year. We had a refrigerator in the basement. Thats what saved us. Only our refrigerator was out the freezer was working. Don't necessarily blame maytag. They just aren't making anything like they used to. I don't know if you are interested but mine was a little older than yours and it cost us $155 to fix vs paying $800 and up for a new one. I have the one that the freezer is on the bottom.
