Default Nonuse of Wells Fargo/Slumberland card

My question is with all of the talk about annual charges possibly going into effect would it be wise for me to close this card? I have never ever used this card just opened it a few years ago thinking I wanted to use it to purchase furniture from Slumberland but thought about it and decided I did not want the debt. Even though it will hurt my credit score should I close this? Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

I'm not even sure it would hurt your credit score if you have never used it to just close it.

If you don't want the debt than close it and have them send you a paper in the mail stating that.

If you've never used it, the card is idle - no benefit to your score afaik.

Keeping an open line of credit out there is a risk that someone else could get access to it.

Me, I'd close it in a heartbeat - but I don't do consumer debt. Period.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

If you plan on making any large purchases like house, or property, I would leave the card open. If you are not planning on any of those types of purchases, I would probally close it. It can affect your credit score to the negative a bit, but it will come back up quickly.

OLITS made a good point about future purchases.

Is this the only card you have? Will you ever need to use it (we hope not, but...)?

I keep a card.........for gas purchases - if I don't want to go in and pre-pay, for on-line/ebay shopping, etc. But I don't carry any balances. If they start charging annual fees I will shop for one that doesn't..........they will be out there, I am sure. Not everyone will be as greedy as the 'big guys' are.

If you don't need it then close it. It won't hurt the score for long and not that much.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. I chose to close the card the other day. Was easy and I figure that since we are not buying a house or anything else on credit anytime soon I would risk it. I just don't want to buy on credit anymore. I have been reformed. Yeah!!!! We are working towards being debt free and saving to build a small house in the next 5-10 years so every step we can take to be proactive right now we are doing. Thanks again.
