Default Storing Fireworks through the Winter

I'm not sure where to post this, so if this is wrong I apologize!

Last weekend I spent a lot of time cleaning and organizing my garage and basement. In the basement, while separating holiday stuff, I came across fireworks in a brown paper bag. I thought we had gotten rid of everything on July 4th, but apparently we had another bag full of 'em!

I have conflicting reports about how to store these - right now they are moved into a plastic storage box on the top of a shelving unit with other seasonal items, in a somewhat cold basement. Anyone know if this is the right way to store fireworks?

Also, I'm not too keen on having these guys around since I recently found out they are illegal (in all forms) in our city. How do you get rid of fireworks other than lighting them and throwing the leftover pieces away?

I would store them somewhere where there is little moisture. In a plastic storage box in your basement sounds like it will work. If you want to get rid of them the only way I know of is to use them up...maybe tomorrow night would be a good time if you can find somewhere to shoot them off that won't get you into trouble.

My hubby suggested storing them in a metal box away from heat and open flames. He also said if you have an old dead refrigerator you don't use it'd be good for storing flammable items such as fireworks, paints, and fuels. And as mombottoo suggested, NYE is a great time for using up any fireworks that are leftover from the 4th of July (provided you can find a legal place to do so)!

I agree with the NYE use.

When I lived with my parents and were packing to move, we found a bag of fireworks my brother had stashed away when he was a teen (10-15 years before). They survived that whole time in a brown paper sack in an uninsulated garage in West Tx. (I'm NOT suggesting you store them that way.) It took me a couple years to burn those off. All that to say - unless you have some unusual situations, I bet they could last until summer if you don't want to burn them off NYE.
