    Default Stained Countertop?

I set my daughter's painting on the counter yesterday and the paint soaked through. It's just washable tempura, but it was red and I can't get it off.

I don't know what the counter is made of, whatever cheap counters from the seventies are.

It's light coloured so everything shows up on it. Is there anything I can do to fade or remove red stains?

Sprnkle with baking soda and rub with a damp sponge. The magic eraser WILL work, but will dull the finish on your counter.

I've heard Bar Keeper's friend is great on countertop stains.

I was going to suggest the baking soda or using salt (let it sit on it for a bit to absorb the stain) as well, scrub gently. Maybe pour on some vinegar and wipe off?

Baking soda & warm water or the Magic Eraser will work real good.

I keep a spray bottle with 3 parts water and 1 part bleach. I wipe the area clean first and then spray with the bleach/water, then let it sit for a few minutes and wipe away. For especially hard stains I let it set longer.

Good luck, I do this on my formica counter tops with good results.

I agree with Josephhgoins, a bleach solution will lift it, my counters are 40 years old and stain easily, juice, coffee, paint. Mist and wipe in a minute...done.

Thank you for all the replies.

I tried the baking soda, it made a big difference but it was still pink. Soaking in vinegar faded it quite a bit. I will check in the basement to see if I have any bleach and let you know if it disappears completely.

There are little stains all over the counter, so if it works I may try it on the old ones also.

Have you tried putting a salt paste over it? I know it lifts stains from my wooden cutting board as well as supposedly sanitizing it.

Make a poultice of baking soda and peroxide. Smooth it over the stain and cover with plastic wrap. Allow to stay there for a few hours. Remove and clean. The peroxide and baking soda try to absorb the stain from the countertop. (We do this for marble and it works well)

I cleaned the whole countertop with bleach and got rid of the new stain and a few old ones. The vinegar actually did a good job as well, by the time I got around to getting the bleach out it was nearly gone already.

I have used a razor blade and try to get under it and pry it off for some things before with good results. Might still leave a residue though.
