College Transcripts
After spending the better part of the day online and on the phone, one of my previous colleges has lost my transcripts. I'm IVing for a scholarship next week. Any ideas on what I can do now? The scholarship is a long shot but it's surely a no shot if I don't have my transcripts. Has anyone dealt with this before?

Do you have a hard copy of your transcripts from previous times you have requested them?

I do not have copies of my transcripts nor have I requested them before. I've never needed them as I've always tested out to get into the class I want / need. Now that this scholarship has come up I have to provide proof of previous transcripts.
Yeah, I know - hindsight is 20-20 but since I've never needed them before it's never been an issue.

It seems to me that the college/university has to provide you some proof of your grades. They can't just say, "oops, they are gone." How far have you gone up the food chain with your request?

Do you have a grade card for those classes?
Did you transfer those credits to another college? If so that college should have them on their transcripts."Everyday as your walking down the street, everybody that you met has an original point of view" -Arthur PBS

Another thought
Did you graduate from the school that can't find your transcripts?
I have found that if you only took a few classes there that they tend to have those filed differently then those that graduated from there.
Once they know where to look they tend to find it with ease.
KWIM?

I have not gone up the food chain yet. That's a good option. Sigh. I still have time yet.
It was not the college I graduated from nor did I have to transfer credits however, knowing that they keep those records differently and / or separate might help.
Dealing w/ a close friend's death this week and cleaning out the home and paper and . . .and . . .etc. I'm not in the right frame of mind. I knew I could ask other FVer's for help and I really appreciate it. Thanks!

Tracking down old transcripts
Make sure you give them additional information than is on the form. Sometimes the year, term and location (some colleges store all records at a central location while others store them at each individual service site) can really help them find the information. If the college was Central Texas College, they are still in the process of converting paper and cd-rom records to their newer systems. Also many times people think they took something for college level credit but it was actually continuing education credits of some kind. If you took the classes on a navy ship give them the name of the ship. Also if you were incarcerated provide the prisoner number that you took the courses under as in years past these records could not be used on the SSN. I have also seen military spouses accidentally register under their spouses SSN. Also sometimes names change and people call the wrong college. When you talk to them over the phone tell them what the name was when you attended. You might actually be talking to the wrong college. When I worked for CTC in the transcript office people were always mixing Central Texas community college up with the nearby Tarleton University, which used to go by another name that was nearly identical to our school. Clarify if you attended a two year or four year institution. That kind of information can help the attendant sort out where to look or where to direct you. Sometimes copies of other colleges’ transcripts, old transcripts, military records, grade reports can help them find or recreate misplaced documents if there is enough info. Also you can offer to provide them over the phone with your name, birthdate, and SSN. Due to privacy regulations they are not allowed to ask for this over the phone. Sometimes a typo prevents them from pulling you up in the system but it can be found through other searches. I hope this helps you and any one else out there.
