Default Do you have any advice on stocking up on diapers?

Well, it's time for us to start stocking up on diapers I think. I'm 23 weeks today and we thought we'd start buying a box of diapers per week (with coupons/sales) so we'd have a nice little supply when the baby arrives.

Do you have any advice on best diaper brands for the price (I've heard AVOID the new DryMax technology), best stores for diaper bargains, how to store diapers (we have a damp basement, and not too much storage space overall) and how long baby might be in newborn diapers? How many diapers do babies go through in a day, etc.

It's our first baby, and I think we have our heads in the sand a little bit, but are very excited and happy to welcome this little bean into the world.

It's hard to stockpile diapers because every baby is different.

Some moms swear by huggies, others swear by store brands. Both of my kids have sensitive skin and the only diaper we have found that kept the moisture wicked away well enough to prevent rash is Pampers.

Until your little one is here, you won't know what works best for him or her. Also, some babies are born big enough that newborns sizes are too small already.

Maybe some more moms have better advice, but that's my two cents.

I am far too old to give advice on brands. However, unless you have a preemie or are tiny people you won't need more than a pkg. or 2 of smalls. Just like 0-3 months clothes.
Also they will often exchange packages as log as they're unopened. Do you belong to SAms Club or Costco. They stock diapers.
Have you had a shower yet??

I found that BJ's brand was the cheapest and still worked fine. I preferred Huggies, but not to the point of paying extra for them. I've always heard that Huggies are better for boys and Pampers for girls, but I'm not sure how true that is.

Right now (we're still toilet training) I'm using the Target brand, since the BJ's membership didn't make sense for us, and I'm hoping that every pack will be the last one. At least for the size 6, the Target brand actually works out a little cheaper than the BJ's box.

As far as storage - even the big boxes had smaller packs wrapped in plastic, so I wouldn't worry about a damp basement.

This is a perfect example of all babies being different. Maggie just turned 5 months old and is still wearing all her 0-3 months clothes. She didn't outgrown the newborn stuff until last month.

One of the guys at work has a 12 week old that is already in 3-6 months.

Stashing cash into a baby fund may be best. If you have any baby showers thrown for you, you'll probably get a few packs of diapers that will be a good starting point.

My newest niece is now 8 months old. I called her mom and here is what she said:

"B" was 8 pounds and some odd ounces at birth. She stayed in newborn size diapers for about six weeks (up to 10 lb size). On average she uses 10 diapers a day, give or take.

She is now 18 lbs and in the size 3 cruisers.

I read somewhere that most babies will stay in size 3 for the longest period of time.

Along with disposable diapers, I'd suggest you also have 1-2 dozen cloth diapers. How horribly old-fashioned is that! Not only are they one-size-fits-all, but in case of an emergency, you are assured a reusable source.

The reason I mention this is because I recently read the book, JUST IN CASE - How to be self-sufficient when the unexpected happens - by Kathy Harrison. In the book a fictional family was caught unprepared for a winter storm and by day 4 they were without formula and disposable diapers and the mother cut up her flannel sheets to use for diapers.

    Just a thought....

Thank goodness my children did not have sensitive skin.
CVS would reduce there diapers to a super cheap price.
You can look out for a store that is changing labeling and you might get a great deal.
I only used 1 newborn bag for each child and a few size 1's.
I saved the good ones for trips out.
My kids are older now and they don't look any different for using many different diaper brands.

My son grew through the smaller sizes fast like everyone said. So I wouldn't stock up on too many pkgs of the smaller sizes. Wait until after your shower and see what you lack.

I agree that you should see what you get for your shower. If you do not get any diapers buy one pack of newborn diapers. Babies in general are not in this size too long it just depends on the size of the baby. Once the baby is here it might be easier to stock up then because you will have a feel for how long he/she might be in whatever size. When my daughter was a baby I used toys r us diapers, which I don't even know if they carry them anymore. Other than them I tried every brand. I found that huggies leaked for me. Besides that most of the brands were the same. You will find what works for you. Don't be afraid to try different brands.

I didn't and wouldn't stock diapers without some very compelling reason. Diapers go on sale every week here, there are always coupons, and they fit differently on every kid. I never kept more than one extra package, except when I bought up all that was left of our favourite ones when they changed the style. The new ones leaked, so I bought every old package that was left.

Huggies fit Kathryn better, while Pampers fit Lauren's body type better. And newborn size fit both of them for exactly 2 days LOL (they were 8 lbs and 9 lbs)...so I would avoid buying that size, or maybe just a small package.

I would advise visiting the major brands' websites to join their mailing lists. You'll get lots of coupons in the mail.

    Good luck...when are you due?

I'm going to be CDing mostly, so that's what I have a stash of. However, I have bought a couple of packages of small diapers on sale. I tried to combine sales with a coupon. It's true that diapers are often on sale.

Congratulations!!! I personally used prefolded cloth diapers for all of my kids. I did buy disposables to use if we were going to be gone for more than a couple of hours. My dd swears by Sam's Club Member's Mark brand, but I can't remember how much they cost, it has been a while her youngest is 4 now.

I have a 4 month old and she was born early weighing 5 pounds, we only use pampers because I have used every other brand plus store ones and everything leaks but Pampers!!! My little one, who gained weight rapidly was in N (newborn) for a month, I would buy at least 2 big boxes of this size, we then moved onto size 1 which I was told she wouldnt stay in long and they were right, I went through 2 large bags and by the time they were gone we had moved onto size 2 which is were we will remain until she reaches 18 pounds. Don't over stock but a couple large things of each would be perfect!!

What I didn't do and I wish I did was stock up on wipes!!!! You will go through those so fast it will make your head spin! Don't forget they also make refills for the bins so don't forgot those, it is sometimes easier and saves money to buy packs of them!
