Where in the midwest are you? "Midwest" covers several climate zones.

You can still find maturing tomato and pepper plants at garden centers. It's not too late to get those in. Fortunately we have had a wet spring.

If you can stand the heat, prep a bed for fall gardening. Starting in August you can begin planting crops for fall growing: carrots, beets, chard, lettuce, turnips and some other things. BUY SEED NOW because it will not be available much longer. Stores are already closing out the gardening stuff.

The least you can do is select an area you want to be your garden and cover it with layers of wet newspaper. Over the summer this will kill the grass and make it easier to till come fall or next spring.

green beans and I believe cold weather crops. Lettuce, carrots, cabbage, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and broccoli. I don't know if you are interested, but if your ground needs to be worked you might want to try square foot gardening. I'm seriously thinking of doing this next year. No digging and very little weeds.

Some good advice given but like one said.......I would try to find at least a couple of bigger plants of things and put them in....they still have time to mature.

You didn't mention your gardening zone.........need to know that.

Midwest to me means hot weather and we are in it right now.
Radishes and beets are both quick growers.
I think you could still get cukes in and get plenty of growing time.

zucchini, tomatoes, cucs, squash, pumpkins, cilantro, basil - it's too hot right now for cold weather veggies in the midwest (lettuce, beets, cabbage, etc.)- we're already in the 80s and 90s.

Hii.their are so many vegetables which you can plant in your garden...like tomato, carrots, cabbage.. you can use that same space to grow 5 to 15 tomato plants or 130 beets.

The true key here is this...since you are starting so late this year...you need to plant plants that have already grown. I heard Lowes...or home depot that had tomato plants that were a foot tall.~THOSE are the types of things you can grow this year.

I'd avoid watermelon's...or cantelopes...unless you find some pretty big plants.
