Using Neti Pot
Well, I finally bought a Neti Pot and just used it. Right now I have a really bad chest cold and am really congested. Think I may have a sinus infection. As long as my head is upright I am fine. If I lay down I am in misery even though I am really tired.
Right now I am able to breathe out of my nose. I really can't believe how easy it was to use. I always thought it would be painful. I am planning on using it again in two more hours. I also have one of those nasal strips on. I have taken a claritin since this is the time I also get allergies for about a week. But I know it is not my allergies bothering me since my nose is not itching. Just know I need to start taking the allergy meds so when I do get full blown allergies I will be prepared.
I decided on the Neti Pot since I am trying to stay away from all the over the counter meds and any possible problems with current meds I have to take.
So I would like to hear of peoples experiences with the Neti Pot. Any info as far as how long it will take for me to notice any real improvement. What was it like the first time you used one. Will my nose be running more than usual now since I am really congested?
Thanks in advance.

I bought mine at CVS. It was the CVS brand for around $11. I had a CVS coupon for $6.99 so it was less than that.

My 17 yr old used one this year for the first time. He used it 2 days in a row..and by the 3rd day...he was much better. In the directions, you'll see they tell you to use it twice a day. Once in the Am, and once in the PM. You will need to do it at least one hour before you plan on going to bed, because you will have some drainage. don't over use it.
It won't help with your chest cold...rub up with some Vic's Menthol Rub...and put t-shirt on with a high neckline. Rub some on your neck also.
Hope you feel better soon~!

I've said it before....I'll swear by it again! The neti pot got rid of my constant cough that Dr's for 4 1/2 YEARS could not diagnose or get rid of!

I LOVE the Neti-Pot. I had sinus surgery last year, but if I had discovered the Neti-Pot first, I may not have needed the sinus surgery. It works wonders!

The Neti Pot does wonders for me. I have sinus troubles and allergies and it makes me feel so much better.
And put some of that Vics on your feet too with socks. It helps and I would go see a doc soon if you don't feel better.

I started using one after I'd had four full-blown sinus infections in 11 months. Using the Neti pot helped me to avoid one for the next year. I actually am using a sinus rinse bottle instead of a Neti pot now.
I hope you feel better soon.

I just went to an allergy doc about a month ago and he said that you couldn't 'overuse' the Neti Pot. He DID rec. the 'sinus rinse pot' for me when I was really bad. Don't like it much.........your nose drips every time you tip your head down.........for hours after!! It has much more force going into your nose!
I love the Neti Pot and have not had one headache since starting to use it about 1 1/2 years ago. I suffer with allergies all year long.
Not sure about when using it with congestion but it doesn't seem to make my nose run more. I would guess that you should see some change after a couple days....not sure.
One caution.............blow your nose VERY GENTLY after using it!!
There is a recipe for the solution posted somewhere on here. (I posted it over a year ago) It is just UNiodsized salt and soda..........3 to 1 ratio.

Well, it is going on day three. Last night I was actually able to sleep and breathe through my nose.
So I am defiantely a convert here. Think I will keep an eye out though for a different neti pot. The one I have the spout is a little large for me. But will be good to take along on trips.

Glad you are feeling better.
The NP I bought is called SinuCleanse and I really like it. The spout on it isn't very big at all.

I save the packets that came with it for when I travel and use the homemade solution at home.
When you are really bad you might try a 'sinus rinse bottle'.......it is a squeeze bottle and it can really blast some water. I tried it for the first time this year..(Dr. said to do it)..........wouldn't want to use it on a regular basis but when I am really bad I do.Last edited by Gabe; 09-02-2010 at 01:22 AM.
