    Question Anyone have wireless Internet?

Cricket is running a rebate right now for wireless internet. I would love to dump Comcast.

(I am 'computer challenged'.........so speak 'regular English' if you post! )

What should I watch out for? Ask questions about?

I called them today and they said I could take the modem home and try it for 24 hours to make sure it will work in my area.........that sounds okay. They said it should be okay as long as I have a USB port..........I do. I am running XP....so he said that should be okay. I am not far from a cell tower so should be okay ...any problems with interference that I should know about?

If you have it........do you like it? What problems have you had with it?

BF has it and the only issues are like those with cell phones. It works great in most areas of his house except one bedroom. When we are out and about or even driving down the road its great unless you get in a real rural area.

When we were remodeling his rental property, we would watch TV on Hulu at night with it with no problems.

I have wireless through AT&T. if i had realized DSL required no wiring = it uses your phone lines and a wireless router - I would have done this much earlier. I use it with a laptop and a netbook, and it is just great.

I was thinking wireless internet from your home - as in you still have a DSL modem but are free to roam through the house vs wireless internet through the city.

I've seen those US commercials for the 'rocket stick' or whatever (USB flash looking drive thing) and you can use the internet in the park. Is that what you're referring to?

FF..why would you like to dump Comcast...this is who we're thinking of going with when we move as current provider is limiting our service.

What are the problems with Comcast if you don't mind me asking on your thread.

All I have to say is make sure you are in a good coverage area. I'm in a bad coverage area for any wireless so I have DSL with a wireless modem for the laptops, my Xbox and Desktop are directly connected.

We have a secured wireless household here. We have some game systems, i pods and laptop running off of it. No problems.

Where is Linus? He is usually one to know all this tech-like stuff.

I've been using comcast, w/ a wireless router for laptops. We set it up 'secured network', I think that's quite important, since I do online banking & wouldn't like my neighbor or any drive by to have access to my wireless network.
Can yours set up as a secured network also?

As above poster said, make sure it can be set secure, password protected.

It's possible that speed will be different in different rooms of the house.

It's very possible that heavy rain or just rain will affect it...such as outages. ( cannot connect to Internet Explorer ) Hughesnet went out went it got cloudy.

By interferences if you mean such as engines running, appliances etc not normally. You may get a glitch if power flickers. A surge protector on the computer SHOULD take care of that.

Make sure that it is unlimited usage if that is what you want. That is what we're running into now. Especially if you're wanting to for example, watch Netflix on computer or TV. Or HULU, download music.
if they say it is 10 gigs and they say that that is HUGE and you're planning on doing any of those things it could be a very big problem. We're being charged with extra gigs and not doing any of that except the music.

Make sure to ask that question if it's even possible that you will be doing any of that before the contract is up.

    Dumping Comcast:

    1. you are on hold FOREVER when you call
    2. 'communicating' with the tech people is like banging your head against a wall!! (they screwed up two of my friends computer so bad they had nothing for two to three weeks)
    2. price has gone sky high since they bought out that other co.
    3. has increased EVERY YEAR for last three years
    4. was told that they 'rent' modems.......don't sell them (they are mostly REFURBISHED crap anyway (am on my second one) I pay $7 a MONTH just for the modem........... $84 a year????
    5. the speeds are seldom/never what they say they are and the 'hang up' time is getting longer and worse.
    6. no specials are EVER OFFERED to the people that have 'stuck with them'.........and was told "no" when I asked
    7. they don't have much competition here (Qwest) and can just about do what they want...............and they do!!

    SHOULD I CONTINUE??????????

Overall..........I am currently paying OVER $65 a month just for internet..........and Cricket and Qwest can beat that by $25 a month. (but Qwest has a contract)

Just to be clear, we are talking about the internet being delivered to your house wirelessly, correct? Most people seem to be posting about their wireless home network, that is still likely being delivered to the house over some sort of cable.

I have not heard good things about Comcast. Bandwidth caps, poor customer service, too frequent outages, and they probably have the most to gain by getting rid of net neutrality.

Yes, mndtrp, I will be getting their signal from cell towers, on a modem that they provide to me and I install (plug in) in my USB port. Is that clear? ( remember.......not up on all the computer lingo here!! )

Yeah, a LOT of people here don't like Comcast.........but for years...that is all we had. Now Qwest has gotten into the pic and others are coming in.........If you don't buy the 'Comcast bundle' they really stick it to you for $. BUT the 'bundle' .....basic bundle is $150!!! (cable, internet, and phone----and no 'primo' stations on cable with that either!!)
