As a preschool teacher it is not recommended to reuse the toliet paper rolls because of the possible ecoli and other germs on them. you touch it before you wipe and the spray when you flush can go ten feet.
I know it sounds like too cautious but would you let your child lick the floor next to the toilet ? well they put everything in their mouths.

But we love the paper towel rolls just storage is a problem and we only want them at the time of the project.

I've been saving mine to stuff with dryer lint, then roll them up in newspaper and twisting at the ends like a piece of candy to make fire starters for stocking stuffers.

I use one to keep hair elastocs, just slip the elastic over them. I also use one to keep makeup crayons and lipstick under control: cut one in half and stand it then just put the pencils or crayons through them

I slit them length-wise and give them to my hedgehogs. They stick their heads in them and run around bashing into things, then pull their heads out, stick their heads in and do it again. I have no idea why but they do. I have three hedgies and they get a new one every week when I clean the entire cage.

we dont purchase papertowels but I clean a Veterans Organization so I get my stash from there and use them for:

    1. cords
    2. wrap my ribbons around them and put on a papertowel holder, easy to pull off just what I need for projects / gifts and never have to put anything back.
    3. wrap yarn around them and then put tube of yarn onto a paint roller and clamp the handle to a table or my chair and crochet, no tangles, no yanking to get more etc. smooth feed and perfect fit with the paint roller.
    4. roll cloth napkins / small tablecloths / doilies to store in drawer - no or less wrinkles
    5. cut once lengthwise to put on hangers to stop the hanger line mess when hanging slacks or sweaters
    6. fire starters as someone else mentioned
    7. tape a bunch together at different lengths for pens / pencils / kniiting needles / crochet needles / rulers etc. attach it to a lazy susan and your really cooking then! you can pretty it up by wrapping with colorful magazine papers/ wrapping papers / old maps / music sheets / scrap fabrics / kids drawings / paint em

I know I do more with them, just cant think of em right now!

I forgot to add for my yarn I also use all the single socks to cover them , I can stuff whatever project I am working on with it and no more tangles in the bins. the socks go right over the tube and yarn easily. and my projects dont get unraveled. I also put a note or the pattern insturctions inside the tube along with the size needle I was using so I dont forget what I was doing! The sock just keeps everything contained.
