Garlic Salt
I found a recipe I'd like to try and it calls for 'garlic salt'. Ignorant question here but can I use garlic powder + salt as a substitute? Or is garlic salt something different altogether?
BTW you dont want to know how long it took me to figure out what 'seasoned salt' was

Yes...substitute garlic powder and add a pinch of salt.~
You'll probably get more garlic flavor that way anyhow...I think garlic salt is more salt than garlic.

I'm pretty sure it's the same. I've actually been doing that lately because I accidentally bought garlic powder instead of garlic salt. But I've never actually used "called for" amounts of that kind of stuff in recipes...so whether or not 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder mixed with salt translates over to 1/4 teaspoon of garlic salt....I'm not sure.

We quit using garlic salt a long time ago to decrease our salt intake. Now, we strictly use garlic power and have not had any issues with flavor. I think we get more flavor from the powder than the salt.

I only use garlic powder. Just add a pinch of salt. No need to go out and buy an additional item.

We only buy garlic powder, for basically the same reasons as others. I can do far more with garlic powder and salt separate, than the two together. I think garlic powder has more of a garlic flavor than garlic salt, and I don't really want that much extra salt in my diet.

Garlic salt is 240 mg salt per 1/4 tsp. Table salt is 600 mg sodium in 1/4 tsp. (That's my husband's salt allotment for the day - yeah, tell me about it!)
So garlic salt is a little more than 1/3 salt, a little less than 2/3 garlic.
I don't use those salts, as I am always looking to reduce sodium. I would start with about 1/2 the quantity of garlic powder, taste and add more garlic, if desired. For example, if a recipe calls for 1/2 tsp garlic salt, I would start with 1/4 tsp garlic powder.
I prefer to use fresh garlic if I can, and there I am usually looking at a clove or two for most dishes, unless they really are heavily garlic.

I make my own using 3:1 ratio salt to garlic powder and store in shaker top container, shaking before using. Imagine that, shaking the shaker.
Easily amused here this morn.

You can always amp up the garlic, with making your own you are in charge.
That website just gives me an idea of things and I tweak at will.

I believe garlic salt is 3 parts salt, 1 part garlic powder like Darlene said...IMO, its a waste of money. I never use the stuff...I only use Garlic powder.

I usually get enough salt in my food already so I just use garlic powder. If you want to make it even healthier, you could dehydrate some garlic and crush it into a powder....no added chemicals to worry about
