Default I Need Help With Finding Shoes...

I'm diabetic and having problems with my feet. I have a size 10-11W foot in womens (or 9-1/2 to 10W in mens). I am looking for a cheap, reasonably priced source for shoes. I think my best bet would be for lace-up type ankle boots or oxford type shoes rather than slide-in or step-in type shoes. I am desperate... I can't wear my athletic shoes every day and to church.
Does anyone or know anyone that might have some second-hand shoes/boots or have a source to find reasonably priced shoes?
Any help would be appreciated !!

We're both blessed with the same size - have you checked your local Walmart for the Dr Scholl's collection? They're about $25-$30 here in Canada and they're comfy and sturdy for the proper support and they go up to 11W or 12. Not sure if 12's a wide though - sorry. And they don't look like 'special' shoes if you kwim? They're kinda stylish.

The other option though I don't really support wearing the for long periods of time - Payless Shoe Source, they have large sizes as well, kinda trendy but I find they're not always comfy nor good for my feet/back b/c they're made to look good and not good for your posture.

Thanks, Libby, for the quick response... I've tried Walmart, walmart.com and payless.com with no luck really. I've tried Kmart, Wolverine, Hushpuppies without much luck. I did find some stuff on roamans.com.
Still looking for any other help !!

I would also go to websites like Dr. Scholls, Aerosoles, etc. Many times they have a clearance section. It sounds as if you should pay a little extra to get better quality shoes. Also don't forget they have socks now specifically for people with diabetes. I bought them just because they have the extra cushioning on the bottom of the foot.

I have also had really good luck looking at Famous Footwear's website. Also at their bogo sales at the store.

Also, shopping off season at the website for shoes seems to also save you money. Right now summer shoes are probably on sale or clearance.

birkenstocks are expensive but worth it. as long as you wear socks you get them resoled. you only get one set of feet.

make sure you size them right

the pair i have on right now are 20 years old. resoled three times. soft like buttah.
    11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
    credit card debt 7500
    mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
    then live on the rest!

i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

i would really make this one place i would spend money if i had to .

i was just at a wound conference and even just the wrong friction in diabetics can cause issues that look like just a callous but has a large infection brewing underneath unknown until the callous is removed .

if you look online and when you find something google the stores name and coupon code and you can usually find some coupons or at least free shipping .

I just bought a pair of Birks less than 48 hours ago and O...M....G...these things are seriously hobbling me. I know there's a breaking-in period, but it's like my arch is balanced on a ball of granite. And I'm not even flat-footed or anything. I've got great arches!

Anyway. How long did it take you to go from "excruciating" to "buttah"? I need some encouragement here.

Re: the OP. Despite my current pain, I will agree with ladykemma and say that Birks are at least worth looking into. All my friends rave about theirs and say they last forever. Plus, they have wide sizes (which they call 'Normal") for every style.

are your toes about a 0.5-1 centimeter from the front? and is your heel touching the rim on the back? it should not be. the arch should be under the arch of your foot.

they feel like surfboards at first.

i prefer the birkenstock boston clog.

    Oh boy.

That's the style I'm actually wearing. My heels aren't touching the rim, but my toes are, like, 0.25 cm away from the front. And now I'm looking at the size converter and the thing is saying that I should be wearing a 39.

    I'm wearing a 38.

My husband has 14EEEEE sized feet - yes, they are boats hanging off the ends of his legs. I always start with Shoes, Clothing | Zappos.com Free Shipping - they have a section on diabetic shoes.

    shoes , Diabetic Approved (A5500) - Search Zappos.com

When I find some I like I use froogle (the shopping version of google) to see if I can find them for less, factoring in shipping.

There is another site I've bought from, will find the name.

In terms of brands, check to see whether Propet works for you - my husband just loves them, very comfortable, good support.

have you looked into diabetic shoe hub? It's online. They pricey but well worth it. I know a couple people that have the same issues, they get sores and take forever to heal, swelling issues. Here is another site.

I recommend getting shoes that are for diabetics. I am a diabetic that wore everyday shoes. I ended up with a diabetic ulcer that took 6 mos to heal. My Dr said to get the diabetic shoes. The shoes I brought cost me 300 dollars. Well worth it. The made the insoles for the way I walk to I put pressure evenly on my feet. I would buy another pair.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and info. I will definitely look at all the sites.

I already have the 'sore'... it's on the top of my foot where any sandal/flip flop would go across. I've found that I cannot wear sandal, flip flop or clog type shoe on that foot... grrrrr. Healing is going well but I'm tired of wearing my athletic shoes every day including church... ugh.
