Smile What exactly is "going off the grid"?

I've seen that mentioned a few times and I'm curious as to exactly what that means. Does it mean no electric at all? No generators? Growing and raising all your own food? Solar panels? Completely self sufficient. I guess I'm just wondering how deep or how far does it go? Does it mean different things for different people?...some go farther than others?

Going off the grid means generating your own electricity instead of getting your power first from the power company. If you don't generate enough, then some people use the power company as a back up; others, if they generate more than they need, sell the extra TO the electric company.

Mother Earth News has a lot of articles about going off the grid if you're interested.
