The cheapest and most basic I can think of would be a plain sourdough.

This website is the one I used for my recipe for a basic sourdough bread...directions are pretty detailed. Worked for me...

    I make a no-knead bread at about $0.35/loaf:

    3 c flour
    1.5 c water
    1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp yeast (or 1/4 sourdough starter works too)

Mix all ingredients. Cover and let sit 12-18 hours. Turn onto a floured surface, press out a bit and fold into thirds (like folding a letter to go into an envelope). Put into a greased pan, seam side down. Cover and let sit 1-2 hours. Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes.

I would imagine the cheapest is the leanest. Flour, water, yeast (or sourdough starter that you raise and keep) and some salt.

If you are using it for breadcrumbs have you thought about bannock (a quick rise bread that is cooked on the stove top)?

My cheapest, isn't readily available to most people. . . we make cattail biscuits -- then grind in a meat grinder, toast and crumble in the blender for crumbs.

Google No-Knead Bread. I use the Jim Lahey, Sullivan Street Bakery recipe posted in the NY Times. Super easy, inexpensive and delicious. We typically go through two loaves/week. I'd post a link, but I don't have the post count yet.
