When you find a Stanley Steamer carpet cleaning coupon, ask to have the rug cleaned too. Take it out to the garage and lay it on the cement floor to clean so the color doesn't run on your carpet.

This company can get about any stain or smell out of carpet for a reasonable price.

The problem is not getting the pee smell out so you don't smell it - it's that the animal will continue to smell it. Every rug I've had from wall to wall carpet and throw rugs that have been peed on once, have continued to be peed on. I've used everything from Nature's Miracle and other enzyme products, vinegar, dry cleaning, carpet cleaner pet smell remover, washing them in the machine - once it's been peed on you'll never get it out and they'll pee on it again and you'll have to keep cleaning it.

I just bought a $100 rug from Target; 5 x 8; and my one cat who is super finicky about his litter peed on it a couple of times before I noticed. It's done. The cost of dry cleaning would cost half the amount of the rug; it's too big to put in the wash and whatever I do with it, the cat will still smell it. I put it outside and am going to do a general hose down and let it dry in the sun - then I'm giving it to a textile recycler.
