Default question for the southern folk here

I was talking to a gal, in a thrift shop, that is visiting from Mississippi, about canning.

She mentioned, and we discussed, a recipe she said was a
'southern thing' called Cha Cha..........that has cabbage,
vinegar, jalapenos and etc. in it.

I looked a recipe up online.......

    Cha Cha Relish Recipe

And it sounds yummy..........but it is called a relish.......
(I thought it sounded good enough to just EAT!)

My questions...........to anyone that has experience with this....

do you use this? How do you use this? Do you make it?
Is this recipe similar to what you make?

    Default cha cha

Hi, I'm from MS and have tried Cha Cha but didn't really like it. People eat it with several different things like crackers, hot dogs, or as a side to their main meal, like pork chops and fried chicken. I have friends who eat it with everything, cold and hot. I have never canned or made it so I can't help with that. I suppose if you like relish (it tastes pickled, yuck, i hate pickled food) then you'll probably like this. give it a try though it sounds like you'll love it :-)

Thank you, I copied it. I've never heard of it but love pickled anything. I'd eat it as a side dish with a hot meal or hamburger or sandwich. Yum.

I'm from Alabama, but have never heard of "cha cha". I've heard of chow chow...wonder if it's the same thing because it's a type of relish thing too...

Google green tomato chow chow and you will find lots of recipes. My grandmother used to make a big dishpan full at a time. Does any one remember their grandmothers dishpans? I have sat with her and shelled peas for half a day and talked and talked to her. I sure do miss my grandmothers.

Oh Lord yes. Filled with beans to snap or washed out to cut corn into to can. She made a bazillion pickles and relish. But cabbage became kraut. A good German woman my grandma.

My mom made that--the stuff she called chow chow.........with the green tomatoes, but she never pickled anything with cabbage.

That was why I was surprised it was called a 'relish' when I googled it.
Never heard of a cabbage relish.

Like the other poster said, I like almost anything pickled and I thought this sounded really good.

I don't like SWEET pickles though..........can 'do' cucumber chips but not sweet pickles.

We always called it chow chow and it was made of whatever was left in the garden before frost--green tomatoes, peppers, etc.
