    IANAL, (but I used to be a legal secretary), bouncing checks/check fraud is a little different. When you write a check, you are doing so with the legal assumption that there is sufficient funds in your checking account to cover it. If you write a rubber check, it can be construed that you knowingly did not have sufficient funds. Thats why a business can get the DA's office involved if need be.

    If mh3rdwheel was getting criminally charged with a felony, believe me, she would know by now. And it wouldn't be Rent A Center informing her.
    “When you get to the end of all the light you know
    and it's time to step into the darkness of the unknown,
    faith is knowing that one of two things will happen:
    you will be given something solid to stand on,
    or you will be taught how to fly.” - Edward Teller

    “Our Earth is degenerate in these later days;
    there are signs that the world is speedily
    coming to an end;
    bribery and corruption are common; children no
    longer obey their parents;
    every man wants to write a book and the
    end of the world is evidently approaching.”
    — From a translation of an inscription on
    an Assyrian clay tablet, circa 2800 B.C.E.

    God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
    courage to change the things I can,
    and the wisdom to know the difference

    I didn't have checks, it was your signature, they were having me paying every two weeks then all of a sudden every week, they would not lower the money I could borrow ($250).

    I really do have the money to pay, but I want proof of the amount, the original amount I owed was around $250, but they now said $501. but would settle for $300. I will take care of it but I want proof of the amount. I will be checking out what Happy Mama sent. I will let you all know what happens.

    I didn't mean to suggest that this was check related. I just giving an example of a fraud situation where dealing with RAC might actually end in a felony charge. You'd have to do some crazy stuff, like maybe give a bunch of false information to get things that you don't have to pay back. It's not relevant, Just kind of thinking out loud.

    In this case they're obviously full of crap, which was kind of my point. If she had been charged with a felony im sure she would know it, and I'm sure rent a center wouldn't be the ones to let her know. That's just silly.

    Bouncing checks is one of my super powers. We have great credit, bills are paid, etc etc, and I still manage to bounce a couple checks a year. Totally get where your coming from.

    smells like BS. Just go to RAC and tell them you are ready to pay and you want a receipt.
    Step 1 $207/1500
    Step 2 Student loan $160.00 monthly
    Schewels paid
    Step 3 $252/$15000
    Step 4
    Step 5 1 child in college graduates 12/12
    2 child $50.00
    Step 6 $70,761/$93,000
    Step 7 Build wealth & give.

    I contacted them today, I told Nationwide Legal I will pay only when I receive paperwork showing what I owe, I also told them about calling my sister and now my dfil, if this did not stop I will contact my attorney and the Attorney General.

    They are going to send me paperwork, on what I owe, when I see the paperwork I will pay the bill in full. I will keep you all posted./

    something stinks. RAC should send you a bill- NOT someone calling over the phone- bogus dude, but it does work on some people who believe the caller when the threat of lawsuit.

    the tenant before me was apparently a doosie: even after six yrs I still get 'collection' notices for them. I open the letter call and tell them to stop sending to me as they no longer reside here.. had one dude who argued with me (something I'll bet to this day he regrets doing) that I was the person they had the account on so when I asked for him to send me proof and the original 'bill'. he couldn't and since I do enjoy messing with peoples mind when they call and annoy me, after I finished with him I called back and spoke with his supervisor- she was polite and appolgized for him.
    sorry got OT- most likely a scam, and I'd put it out of my mind. you might inform RAC that there accounts have been hacked as you got this weird call.
