The big difference between the iPad w and iPad2 is that the 2 has a built in web cam and video chat functionality. So you can web chat with anyone else that has a web cam. Its great if you have relatives far away that you like to stay in touch with.
Another question is wifi vs. 3g. If you have wifi at home and just plan to use the ipad at home, surfing the internet on your couch, save the money and just get a wiFi ipad and not have to pay a monthly fee.

my dd has an ipad 2 from school- the entire freshman class has one ( well we pay rental fees for it ) i think the and video chat is the main difference - not sure if the orginal ipad can be set up with the " cloud " thingy or not . hers is wifi maybe also how big memory is and maybe some of the newer apps can only go to ipad 2 ? may also be a little thinner
i bet if you google you can find a chart outlining differences*~Debbi~*

The iPad 1 can do the cloud thingie. In addition to not having the video chat, the iPad 1 also doesn't have a camera.
when I got mine, I chose to get a refurbished iPad 1 because I didn't think the camera/video was worth the extra cost.Loving wife to DH (8/31/03) and Mommy to Owen Alexander (9/20/06) and Oliver Andrew (5/25/12)

A good article to skim, MacWorld is reputable: Review: The iPad 2 Review | Macworld
Also, in case you aren't sure if you want an iPad or a Kindle:

That is from pcmagazine, another well-known source.
Having had my hands on both (work-related, we were issued them), I'd say if you are techy-loving, get the iPad2 and if you are surprised you even logged on to check email today, you will probably be satisfied with iPad 1.LDR

Storage space for ALL your devices. So if you had a Macbook, iPod, and an iPad you could have them all store the same apps, music, documents etc in one location, sync them up in a sense.
Apple - iCloud stores your content and pushes it to your devices.LDR
