    Default Coupon Question

When you have a coupon for a free item and the item is on sale does your cashier take off regular price or the sale price?

This has happened twice and both times with the experienced cashiers.

Today I had a coupon for 5 free 2Liter cokes. They were on sale for 99 cents. Regular price was $1.49. The cashier took off $7.45 instead of $4.95. So I made $2.50. The other item I had today was one of the catalina free coupons the register spits out. The item was normally $3.24 and on sale for $2.50. The cashier took off the $3.24 so I made 74 cents.

I have just started using coupons so I didn't know if this is normal practice or done only by some stores.

    freedeal,

That's great that your store took off that amount! I think every store does the coupon thing with their own rules.

Recently I couldn't use a coupon at Longs in a buy 1/get one free, I also had a $1 off coupon and I wasn't able to use it.

Recently at Safeway I bought a package of chicken on sale with your club card! When I checked out it didn't give me the right price so I went up to customer service and they didn't just give me the difference they gave me back the entire cost of the package. Now that was a good deal of almost $12.

So watch your receipts! I am sure some of the real coupon queens will be on here soon letting you know better than me.

Around here it's whatever price it's currently selling for which I have no problem with. It's a better deal if I buy one at a sale price and get one free. Also, if a coupon doubles to more than the purchase amount, it only takes off the purchase amount. I have heard of other people getting money back though.

The cashiers usually look at the receipt to get the price, so whenever I have a free item coupon I get back whatever price the item rang up at. If you made money, great, LOL.

At my double coupon store, they always take off the sale price. They will never refund the customer any money for a transaction--free but no spare change back.

Normally, the cashier takes off whatever price the product rings up at. I have saw cashiers who take off whatever the maximum value of the coupon indicates, though. Every store is different and every cashier is different in how coupons are handled.

I just used a bunch of a $1.00 off coupons at homeland in wichita, and got double $1.00 off and a couple of the items where under $1.00 or under $2.00 so it just took more off my total, so i spent $46.96 and saved $58.85 the guy behind me yelled you saved over 50% he was amazed and my dh said that I was the bargain shopping queen, my dh was just bragging about how well i save money, it made me feel really good, he actuall pays atttention when we go shopping to how much i do save. my savings for the whole grocery shopping was $125. so i am really happy. sometimes here depending on the cashier they take off the sale price and sometimes the regular price it depends. but i like when they take the full price off, great job on using coupons, I just make sure that the coupon i have that i will use for something that I will use, and it is not something i would not buy anyway or if it is free, is it something that i will use, I usally get the kids treats with coupons and when the product is basicly free, you still have to pay tax on the coupon.

My husband has been going to work and telling one of the guys he works with. He took a box of the Hot Pockets to work and told the guy that I only paid like 10 cent a box. The guy tried to give him a dollar for me to get him 10 boxes. I told my DH don't dare have me shopping for the guys at work. It takes time and effort to make coupon shopping work.

I have just started really using coupons so I usually don't have a lot. Just multiples of the ones I will use that I buy off eBay. We don't buy a lot of packaged food so mostly coupons for ice cream and quick foods for the kids.

Now for those who get lots of shampoo, deodorant, soap, etc - how do you do that? I haven't found coupons or sales yet to match. What brands are the ones you can usually get free?
