I have used them, and have mixed opinions. If I was just using them to buy some things online, I think that would be ok.
1. Most have "fees" or some kind, like $2.00 or $2.50 per month for each month you don't use them - but not all. It pays to check if you're going to have them for a while or give them as gifts.
2. I always feel like I give up some money at the end - when my last card had $2.47 on it, how could I find something to buy or someway to get the money off of it? I ended up doing a weird kind of Paypal transfer with DH, not sure if what we did is even an option anymore.
Other than that, they work really well. Another option you might look into if you're only using them online is Webcertificates - they work the same way, but you only get the card info, and not an actual plastic card.Loving wife to DH (8/31/03) and Mommy to Owen Alexander (9/20/06)

Also sometimes the Visa, Mastercard and American Express GC can cost to purchase. My bank was going to charge me $5 for each one.

I bought one for DS to get a bike at college, and it worked great! I bought it at Safeway, and he ended up using it to buy stuff online. lol
