I bought a baby bed at Target in 1992 and it's made it through 7 kids. I'm not sure that is true now but it worked for me.

i have found that babies are not rough on furniture like say my 4 year old (chair killer) so like a crib wont really get that much wear anyway.

we bought a crib from there in 2006 for about $300 and our 2nd kid is in it now. it has teeth marks in it from when my daughter was chewing on everything, but other than that still looks new. our son is using it now and will use it for a toddler bed when he is ready.

The same furniture they selll at BRU is at Target. I have used the same crib from BRU since 1998, through 3 kids and this baby will sleep in it too when he decides to quit cosleeping. The beds are very sturdy. I can't say the same for dressers/armoires. They are usually cheaply made w/bad reviews. The best one I saw was called a Shaker Style or something, it was a changing table dresser that you could get a hutch for if you wanted.

Babies aren't that tough on stuff, it's mostly older kids!

I would check garage sales first. That's where we got our crib for our two and then we sold it at our garage sale.

Also, keep in mind babies don't need nearly the stuff they make you think they do. We did have a changing table, which I liked, but it was with our crib that we got at the garage sale. But you can put a mattress on a low dresser too. I did love our glider rocker that we got. We got it for a gift, but that would be the thing I would spend the most on.

    Good luck!! Congrats!

I second trying to get things secondhand. Almost all my nursery/baby furniture came from my brother and his wife. It's gone through 6 babies now...and I think my sister-in-law passed it on to someone else after I gave it back to her.

I bought my jenny lind style crib at Sears for $80 and my child used it and so did my neice and it's still in excellent condition. For dressers I like second hand shops and now a days people put changing pads on top of the dresser and use that as a changing table. You can get a good pad and cover for $30.

What about freecycle? We gave away our son's crib. It was secondhand to begin with and in great condition. We don't know anyone who's expecting. Have a look on freecycle. You can get some great baby stuff.

We bought IKEA cribs (about $200) for the kiddos and they held up fine. Then we received the mattresses (Sealy - from Sears) as a gift. The mattresses were warrantied, do we did replace them just before the kiddos moved to twin beds.

I still have one crib/mattress if you live nearby! Just send me a note!
