Default Most frugal way to dig holes for a fence?

Other than by hand! We are putting in a split rail fence (we got it used!) and need to dig 25 3 foot deep holes. Our ground is incredibly hard and very rooty, because we have so many trees. It could take weeks to do it by hand. What would be the best, most managable tool for 1 person to use to dig these holes? We are hoping to avoid renting a bobcat. Thanks!

Check with a local rental place and see if they have power augers for digging holes.

My grandfather told me that during the War (#1) they used hand grenades from the enemy to dig (fox) holes, but I think you may want something more confining.

I second the rental of a power post hole digger or auger. You can use a manual post hole digger, but you will need to have the ground somewhat wet - you can either wait on a rain or flood the area with water. Good luck!

1 case of beer, an order of pizza...

build it and they will come...or in this case feed them and they will dig.

If you can get a hydrolic post pounder, you won't need to dig holes. Those things are amazing! Just line up a post where you want it and SLAM, SLAM -- the post is in the ground.

    "hire" some friends/guys for food/drink

otherwise, i'd rent a pole digger/auger for easiest route.

otherwise, men can be cheap labour!
