    Question Scraps questions...

How small is the smallest scrap you'll save? How do you store your scraps? Do you store them altogether, or do you sort them by color?

I save scraps that are 1" x 2" approx, and larger. I just throw them in a ziploc bag- don't have any organization yet. My hope is to learn to foundation piece or string piece so I can use these.

Good question Michelle. I use to save every little piece of material but when we moved and I have such a small sewing room, I decided enough. I threw pieces out - horrors!!

I keep anything 2 inches or larger but nothing smaller than that. I purchased a couple of plastic containers from Walmart on sale and use those to store my pieces in. I have strips in one pile and squares in another.

Another thing I often do is if I have a piece of material left over, I cut out triangles. I love quilting with triangles, so I cut them out and keep those in a Ziploc bag. When I get enough, then I make a quilt. I've also done this with strips for Log Cabin quilts. That way the material is already cut up, ready to sew when I want to make a quilt.

btw - I don't sort them by color. I just would have enough room for that.

I save everything over 2 inches or so. I love the idea of cutting the strips for Log Cabin quilts from the scraps, my daughter (age 15) loves to make the Log Cabin pattern so this would be great for her. I have lots of scraps from my multitude of UFOs, lol.

I just went through my scraps again and threw a bunch out. It felt so good to once again organize my plastic containers.

Like everything else, you can have way to many small pieces. I know others who save every tiny piece, but for me anyways, its just to many pieces.

I love the see through plastic containers where you can have specific shapes or sizes in them. Calico, I don't know if you have Superstores there, but they have these wonderful see through plastic containers you can stack on top of each other (there actually little drawers) and they work wonderful for quilting supplies or for that matter, even sewing supplies.

Ya know what, I was looking at the rolling cart (with pull out drawers) that I have in Delaney's room for her blocks, lego etc. and thought that would be perfect for quilting supplies. I now have all my fabric etc. on a bookshelf, it is quite organized but some things I would like contained and in a drawer. I am going to have to look for another one for "me"!
