I was thinking of thinking off doing this and it make take alot of time but i was wondering if i could use denim and mixed fabrics that are similar in weight to do it. grandmothers quilt one looks pretty easybut then i was wondering about other shapes.

It's very easy to do after you learn it. There are books and books on this. The one I have is "300 paper-pieced quilt blocks" by Carol Doak And it has a DVD with it. I think denim would be great, although I haven't used it yet.

Can anyone tell me WHY it's done? I've quilted for years and never paper pieced and never understood what it was supposed to do for your quilt. Thanx. Sorry to highjack your thread, lol.

I liked it, though it was a bit slower, because if you stay on the lines the seams are right. Every time. All the corners match. I'm not great at driving a sewing machine so the help was greatly appreciated. Also, it can make very complex blocks easy to do.

I used the Carol Doak collection too. It has really nice blocks.

Paper piecing: When you are doing hexagons like that it is very important that the pieces are correctly shaped and identical in size or the whole thing goes wonky very fast. You wrap the fabric around your paper shape and iron it in place.

You use the paper templates to keep your very small fabric pieces from getting distorted as you assemble the pattern. As long as your flower garden hexes are the same weight you should not have problems. It is a great design for using up scraps.

Paper Foundation piecing: again, while working with very small pieces sewing them to the paper foundation gives you more accurate piecework and very sharp corners. It is a preferred method for doing miniature blocks because it keeps everything under control. You can sew VERY tiny pieces on a paper foundation.

I love to paper piece and I recently made a Mariners Compass that would not have turned out correctly if I did not paper piece (too many points). It is very easy to do, but you will find that you do have more waste when making blocks. I usually take my time before sewing to make sure I dont waste too much.

Also, it's not difficult to learn...just make sure you've lined up your fabric correctly before sewing and make sure you use a small stitch length or when you tear your paper off (after ironing and sewing blocks together) you could tear the stitching right out.

Thank you all for sharing your information. I might try this to get myself into quilting more seriously.
