THE quilt I'm working on...

It's a nightmare! Here's the Pic...

It's huge...king size. We have a queen size bed. It is made of a myriad of fabrics - cotton, poly-cot, rayon, etc. - meaning it will probably fall to pieces on the first wash. It is my first attempt at hand quilting and the consistency is not great! Also my first attempt at designing quilting patterns. Needless to say I made it far more complicated than it needed to be! I had to piece the cotton batting, and didn't overlap it. It's too late now. With the dark blue backing, a line actually shows through to the front where it isn't quite matched. Sigh... And to add insult to injury, when I unrolled it for the photo I discovered a water stain on one of the corners.

To be honest though. I started this quilt at 17 years old. I'm 49 now. It was a beginner project where I definitely bit off more than I could chew! But I've learned a lot on this quilt. And DH doesn't notice the problems...except the water stain. I'll have to see if there's a way to wash this without that rayon coming to pieces...

Dh never sees my mistakes either. Even water stains wouldn't bother him.

The learning part is the best part. When we learn from our mistakes and then keep on quilting, it's great. You've done a great job on it!!

You know, you probably learned so much by making this complicated quilt... now you will know for subsequent quilts. I'm dying to quilt. I even got some fabric now, I'm just scared to do it because I don't know how... so good for you for putting it together, it looks great to me

Looks wonderful and I'll bet it keeps you nice and warm. You didn't make any mistakes, you just learned better way to do it next time. Education always has some price. lol Right now the bluejean memory quilt I'm working has a few flaws but the person whos getting the it is just happy to have the parts of her dad. To her its perfect.
The funny thing I've found about handmade gifts over the years, those who get them never see any faults just the love that went into the gift "For them".

Aren't dh's the best? First quilt I made for our bed, we got in that night and my dh said 'oh, this quilt feels really great... must be all the love that was stitched into it'

I love your quilt, and we are always our worst critics. And the fact that you are finishing something you started 30 years ago says tons! Most people would have thought 'I'll never finish it - it's outta here'. Good for you for just completing it. Take what you learn from it, and move onto the next.

I must admit, part of the motivation to finish it is the fabrics in it. I remember the clothes sewn from those fabrics...or the storebought clothes that went into that quilt! My Gram's dresses and aprons, Mom's dresses and aprons, my nightee fabric, and my sister's nightee fabric, Dad's shirts, etc. It's a real sentimental thing, and needs to be finished for that reason alone.

My daughter has volleyball shirts I'd like to use to make a duvet cover. I think having a quilt made from sentimental fabrics is wonderful. Please show us a picture of the finished product.

I think it's lovely! Good for you for finishing it. A light soaking in warm water of the part with the water stain only, should at least help to fade the water stain. Try doing it in your sink or bathtub then use towels to press the water out so that it doesn't produce another stain.

The pattern looks familiar. Is it the "Trip Around The World" pattern? I've always wanted to try one of those because they are so pretty.

Yes, it's Trip-Around-The-World. Thanks for the cleaning tip. I think I'll try that this summer when I can drape it over an outdoor drying rack to dry. It's too big to hang in the house this time of year... I guess it's okay to leave the stain a few months longer, seeing as it's been there for how many years?
