Smile Need Quilting Help! Questions :) Newbie

I have always wanted to quilt Since I was a little girl but never did. Now I've got a major urge to make a beautiful gift for someone special.

Can someone tell me the basic items I would need to start quilting? Is it expensive to get the start up items needed for it? How much time does it take to make a quilt? I am brand new to this and would really need steps Or any helpful advice.

    Thanks a bunch

Here are a couple of threads I've done on quilting:

    Quilting tips

Quilting tips to get more quilting done and faster

Now I'll try to answer your questions.

Is it expensive to get start up supplies - as in any hobby, yes it does cost money to start quilting. But you don't need what all the quilting stores say you need. You need a rotary cutter, cutting mat, a couple of hard plastic rulers, and a sewing machine. You can also do it by hand and only use a pair of scissors, needle and thread. Material does cost money, but again it depends on where you purchase it. Walmart has quilting material, as does JoAnnes (watch for coupons) along with quilting stores. Like any hobby, it depends on how much you want to spend on it.

How much time does it take to make a quilt - that depends on YOU and what size quilt your making. Do you plan on spending lots of time quilting or just a little bit of time. My second thread I posted here gives you some tips on quilting so that it doesn't take up much of your time and you can do it in spurts. I can make a baby quilt in 2 days with a simple pattern and can make a queen size quilt in 4 months, if I stick with it. It depends on what amount of time I want to put into it and it also depends on the pattern - is it a simple or hard one.

Basic items - I've posted that in the thread I put here for you.

If you have anymore questions, ask and I'll try to help.

Also just so that you know, I'm giving a picture tutorial (course) on quilting in a few weeks, closer to the end of Nov., first part of Dec. You might want to take part in that and learn some simple basics and some little tricks. It will be a picture tutorial and hopefully that will help you also.

Wow, homestead mamma! Thanks for all the answers I have the sewing machine, so that helps Now I am on my way to get the other stuff you listed

WHEN WILL YOU BE DOING THIS? DO I NEED TO SIGN UP? IS THERE A COST? I WOULD BE INTERESTED. YES PICTURE TUTORIAL WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL

Colleen, no there is never any cost to tutorials here. It will be closer to the end of Nov. I think. I think I will do a poll though and see just who wants to do it and when.

If you decide to start quilting before though, just ask any questions you want to here. I'll help as much as I can. Although sometimes its hard to describe a quilting problem, I've taught a number of ladies how to quilt on the net.

I'm glad you've decided to start quilting. One thing I can say, is that it is addicting and once you start purchasing material, watch out because it begins to call your name each time you pass a quilting store.
