Quilting tutorial starting date!!
Well after asking the question, the tutorial/course will start on January 2nd, 2003. I'm really excited about this and having so many wanting to participate.
Here is a list of what you will need. (I might add more later.)
- a cutting mat (18 x 24 is the best)
- rotary cutter
- 6 x 12 inch hard plastic ruler (Omnigard is the best I think)
I'll give you the amounts of the material in a few days and I'll post them to this thread.
Will take about 2 months to do this and then March I plan on doing a more advanced one with triangles which if you finish this one, you'll be able to do with NO problem.

Just curious - what pattern will we be making?
BTW - Batting By-the-Yard and Packaged Batting is going to be 50% off at JoAnn from Sun., Nov. 17th - Wed., Nov. 27th
Didn't you say this is going to be a crib/wall hanging sized quilt? Everyone might want to go ahead and take advantage of the batting sale if they have a JoAnn nearby.

I agree, if you can purchase batting at a great price, then go ahead. Even material, if its on sale.
Quiltermom - I'm not quite sure yet what it is going to be. Seeing has we have so many new quilters, I think I'm going to do two different patterns. Give me a couple of days to look at this.
Tip: I always purchase batting that is double or queen size. You can cut it down to the size of the quilt your using and if you can get a good deal on it and decide you want to make a bigger quilt, you have it on hand. I usually purchase mine in "queen" sizes. Also watch for batting at Walmart.

Here are a couple of places.
- Walmart (they often have them in kits but the mat is smaller than I would recommend, but if your looking for good prices, you can find them there)
- JoAnne's (if you can get a 50% off coupon or watch for a good sale, you can get it there and sometimes in kits also)
- A quilting store (more expensive but they have top of the line. If you plan on doing quilting once this is finished, this is my recommendation. )
TIP: I purchase top of the line equipment and the best material (100% cotton only) at quilting stores. The only way that I can do that is be very frugal in other areas. So I cut back on the heat, on meat and on going out.
Quilting can be expensive just like any other hobby, but once you have the equipment, its not that costly, except for the material. Again there are several ways to purchase material (the same as the above).
TIP #2: Begin now to go to the library and get quilting books. REad as much as you can. Begin looking at colors and see what you think goes well together. Go to quilting stores and look around at the quilts they have hanging on their walls. Ask questions while your there. Now is the time to begin to think quilts!! Don't only look at quilting stores, but go to furniture stores or clothing stores. See what colors they've put together. Are there colors you particularly like together, are drawn too or dislike. Keep a journal. Thats the fun of quilting!!

I have all that stuff..... I can't wait !!!! I am so excited !!!!
Question ?????
What is the difference in a flat quarter and any other yardage ???
Are we going to need flat quarters ????

Lori, we won't need any "flat quarters" but we will be using "fat quarters" which are 18 x 22 in. in size and making quilting just a wee bit cheaper in my books.
It is a 1/4 of a yd I believe.
I find I use fat quarters lots because you can purchase them often on sale, joined a fat quarter train or purchase them at full price. They often are 3 for $$, or 10 for $$. Walmart sells them I believe in 10's and JoAnne's sells them but I'm not sure in what amounts there. The neat thing about fat quarters is you can have lots of different colors and designs and don't have to purchase a whole amount of material all at once.
WARNING: Fat quarters are ADDICTING and once you have 1, you won't be satisfied with one. You'll want more and more and they will keep calling you until you have hundreds.
And I mean hundreds!!
Does that help!!

Just a tidbit - JoAnn sells *fat* quarters AND *flat* quarters (at least at the store here they do). They are both 18x22 pieces of material, but here's the name difference......
The *flat* quarters are folded into flat squares and are hanging in little square bins mounted on the wall. There is a label on them that says flat quarter.
The *fat* quarters are rolled into long tube shapes and are all thrown haphazardly into a bin together (so you have to dig through it all to see what's there). There is a label on each one of these that says fat quarter.
WEIRD since it's the exact same thing!

Did dh do good?? He bought me a 6"x24" acrylic ruler, 18"x24" cutting mat and 45 mm rotary cutter at JoAnn's tonight. It was a 3 peice set and he paid $24.99 for all 3 pieces!! (I gave him my wish list and he got it early!) (I am almost sure he wants something in return for getting this for me already-like a weekend away to go fishing!!
