    Lightbulb My Favorite "Tip"...add yours

My favorite "Tip" is to place my block pieces on a piece of fine grain sand paper. I just finished making some quilted potholders. Haven't made the same design in years and since my brain is in "forgetful" mode most of the time I didn't want to mess up and have to take out stitches because I put the blocks together wrong.

I cut my pieces for the block and lay them out on the sand paper. They DO NOT MOVE! LOL. I just lay the sand paper beside my machine and look at the block to see how it should be sewn together then pick up the pieces as I need them. This way, if I have to get up and leave my machine for some reason, as soon as I sit back down, I know exactly what piece needs to be sewn on next.

This little step saves me so much time and prevents a lot of aggravation. I can go from the design wall/or desk, to the sand paper, to my sewing machine without mixing up my pieces.

Does anyone else have any "Tips" they would like to share?

Dolphin, this is a great idea. Send it into PBS Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting. They have a tips and techniques section. They give prizes if they use your idea on the air!

    Thumbs up

Another "tip" is to use a scrap piece of fabric to start sewing when sewing triangles together. Mine always want to flip or scrunch up into feed dog when I start sewing the end and I end up with a nasty mess that I have to remove the threads from and sometimes I end up tearing the corner of the fabric beyond repair and have to recut the piece.

I always keep a small stack of little scraps atleast an inch wide on my sewing machine table to easily grab and use.

Hey, just realized now that I have my little thread/scrap catcher bucket I will always have scraps ready! Cool!

I always use bee's wax on my thread when I am hand quilting - the beige wax, not the yellow one. Makes quilting so much easier!!
