    Default Help me Hometead Mamma

I need to start collecting now for Januray's tutorial. I bought the rotary cutter, mat and see thru ruler by fiskars, i have a machine. Wht else do I need? How much fabric? All fat quarters, if so same colors, how many different colors, If by the yard, how many yards, how many different colors. Sorry I know I have lots of Q's, but I am excited and want to have everything I need, but because of money, I need to get it a bit at a time>>>Thanks, Robin

Okay I'll help as best I can.

    - You'll need 100% cotton thread. You can use a white color when using light color material or a neutral color. If your going with dark material, pick a darker shade of thread. I don't have thread for every colour of material I have, I just get neutral colors. Make sure though it is 100% cotton.

    - If your going with fat quarters - you'll need about 5-6. Now I'm not good at math so I would get 6 fat quarters, 3 light colors, 3 dark colors. You can use prints and plains, your choice. Again I would use a combination of both. Now if you want to get more, then purchase a few more fat quarters.

Now the reason I'm also not saying exactly how many you need is because of this often when quilting, you'll find you don't like the colors you purchased or you might think they don't match. So in doing the tutorial, it probably would be better to have less so that way if you find you don't like the color combinations, then you can purchase more.

    - you will need batting for the back (crib size) unless you decide to make a larger quilt.

    - backing for the back, again you'll need crib size. You probably will want to go a plain color for the back and you can pick this up at Walmart. Again I would wait until we have finished the top before I purchase this.

    - you'll need material for the sashing, border and binding but again wait until we've done the blocks. I'm looking at doing 8 blocks. The reason I'm telling everyone to wait to purchase this is because you are going to want to make sure you like the material you purchase. Once were into block 3-4, you can go out and purchase your sashing and I'll explain that all in my tutorial on how to do it, what to look for and what else you will want to do with it.

    - you'll need 1 yellow fat quarter (print or plain - preferably print though)

    - you'll need a pencil

    - one sheet of sandpaper

Also, this will not be done in one week. Were going to take our time, learn to quilt properly and have fun while doing it. I'll also be doing more than one tutorial at a time, for the beginners as well as for those who have already done some quilting but not lots.

    HTH

btw - I forgot the most important one.

You'll need a dozen seam rippers, because invariably, you'll lose them everytime you use one and put it down.

    You'll also need:

    - long straight pins with heads on.
    - iron and ironing board
    - quilting safety pins (they are the smaller ones)

Here's a tip for the seam ripper(s) ....... make a little plastic pouch and tape it to the machine, and keep the ripper in it... or just use velcro......

CJ does it have to be very patterned yellow? Mine is more of a tone on tone print. It is a "gold" rather than a yellow. Will this work or do I need to get a different one and save this for something else? TIA

Frugalmel - no, it can be whatever type of yellow you want or like. It doesn't matter, its your choice.

Darlene - if you want to only get one ruler for now I would get the 6 x 12 inch ruler. Next I would go to the 24 x 6 inch one and lastly I would get the 15 x 15 inch ruler. That is all I have and all I ever plan on having.

    You don't need more.

Here is what you use them for which might help you even more.

    - the 6 x 12 inch ruler is used for cutting the shorter cuts. You use it a lot when you use fat quarters or that size of material.

    - the 6 x 24 inch ruler is used when you make the longer cuts, such as your sashing, binding or borders.

    - the 15 x 15 inch ruler is used mostly for squaring your blocks, a MUST have if you do lots of quilting. It is the best ruler I have for the money I paid for it. It is awkward to use though for short or long cuts.
