Exclamation Quilting tutorial assignment - #2

Okay this one will be easy. It will be all about colors.

Go to the library and pick out a couple of quilting books. Bring them home and look at the color combinations. What do you see. Do you like their color cominations that they've chosen or dislike them? Why?

Read anything that has to do with color in the book. If you can pick up a couple of quilting magazines, do so. You'll find some really interesting color combinations usually in the quilting magazines.

Then I want you to do a bit of homework. Find out what the primary colors are and what compliments them. You can find that information in most art magazines or books.

Tip: Another great place to see color combinations is at a painting supply store. Even Walmart has the color wheels!!

Come back here and post about what your seeing, what you like and what you don't like in combinations!!

    Have fun!!

I think I am pretty good at color combinations, it is matching different patterns that bothers me. Do you have any tips or help with this?

Matching different designs - you hardly ever have to worry about that. Its the colors that you have to really worry about and even then you don't, because most colors are pretty neat in a quilt.

It really is amazing when you see the different colors and designs together. I hardly ever look at the design of the material, its the colors I'm more concerned about.

So many people struggle with color and I always say, let it go. Once in a quilt, its amazing what color does. It seems to just blend in together with other colors. That is one of the reasons I've done this assignment this week, because I know someone will want to know if this color goes with that color or vice versa. When I took my first quilting course, I had an amazing teacher who refused to tell us. She always said, "put it together" and see what happens. Wait until I do the tutorial and I talk to you about "yellow" and the little surprise about that color. Its will be fun!!!

It is fun though to get some quilting books and look at color combinations. I always am thinking about how the quilter came up with that particular combination and wondering if those are her favorite colors, or if she took a chance.

For me, taking chances in quilting is the fun part!!!! Once a person truly can do that, your imagination can run wild.

How can you tell I love colors???

I have magazines and have been through drooling on them so if i can see though the wet spots i will look at them.
Same here Robin, I don't have a problem with colors, I get too many patterns together and it gets too busy. the person i sent the train on to can testify to that. not one solid in it.

I get pattern crazy too, but I don't care. I like all colors. I think I am liking the yellows and oranges the most, but I am not surprised. Fall is my favorite time of year.

ok still working on this one. I have gotten a couple of books and mags. I know what colors i like together. More importantly I know what I DON'T like. I like most colors, even ones i am not fond of normally, when pared with complimentary colors I find I like them better. I don't like brown in most quilts. Especially when pared with yellow. (I do like a fall leaf applique however.)
    Real decisive I know. LOL

I know my primary, secondary, and tersiary(?) colors, from art class. I also picked up a color wheel to help with fabric selection. Now I just have to save my $$ up to buy more fabric-So I can play with it. LOL

I like the deep colors -- both vibrant and muted. But I don't want my quilt to be "depressing" -- I am trying to find a good balance.
