No-Batting Denim Quilt
This was e-mailed to me
**Please read all instructions before you start **
Supply list:
Denim Jeans (or 2 ½ to 3 yds denim fabric)
6 inch plastic ruler Ball point pen (black is preferred)
Jeans needle (14 or larger) 3 yards of cotton or flannel (this can be in one piece, in 3 – one yard pieces, or 6 – half yard pieces)
Thread
Olfa cutter and mat
¾ yard of material for binding (this is optional, see step 9 for optional binding/finishing techniques)
1. Start by cutting apart your jeans. I find the best way is to first cut along the inside leg seam from one ankle to the other. I then cut from the center crotch seam up through the zipper area. I do not put zippers in my quilt. I do not cup apart through the back area of the jeans. (If you use denim fabric then go to step 3)
2 . Determine the size of your quilt. A nice throw or picnic size is 9 squares by 10 squares. This would give you a quilt with 90 squares in it.
3. Lay out your jeans with the wrong side facing you, and mark with your ruler and pen. Cut out the squares.
4. Take your backing material and cut out 90 squares. This can be done very easily with an Olfa cutter and mat. If you are using 3 fabrics, you will need to cut out 30 squares of 3 colors, etc.
5. Take one background square and one denim square and pin them together with the wrong sides together. Do this again to one more set of squares.
6. While holding one denim/background square in each hand, place the right sides together of the background material and sew a one half inch seam. You should now have two square segments together have the raw seam edge on the same side as the denim material and background material already attached to the opposite side. Make 9 rows of 10 blocks each in this same manner.
7. Sew your rows together. All of your raw seams should now appear on the denim side of your quilt and the backing should be already attached and covering your denim squares on the back.
8. Take your scissors and cut into each seam about ¼ inch in depth and about ½ inch apart. Make sure you do not cut into your seams.
9. If you prefer binding, you now make your binding and attach it. If you want the "frayed" look that you can sew a one half inch line of stitching all around the edge of you quilt and then cut into the edge of your quilt around the outside ¼ inch just as your did with the seams in step number 8, making sure you again do not cut into your line of stitching.
10. After cutting take your quilt to a Laundromat and wash it twice in a top-loading machine. This type of machine will help the denim to fray better. Dry your quilt top.
Please note: This quilt does not require batting or yarn because there is not need to tie it. You can embellish your quilt with buttons, labels, pockets, etc.
