Default How do I teach my dd age 6 to quilt?

Just give her a couple of blocks and a real needle? Or what? Please share how you started you darling daughter to sew.

Kin, what a great idea to get your dd quilting. First, give her some material and teach her how to use your sewing machine. Have her sew straight lines, even if you have to draw the lines on the material. Get her handling the sewing machine that way.

Once she has done a bit of that, then cut out some squares and have her sew them (a couple together at a time) and then into rows. Don't worry if they don't quite line up or aren't sewn exactly right - give her the freedom to do it.

Let her choose her colors and if she is a bit off, teach her how to pick colors, but always give her the last choice. Let her make a simple wall hanging or a small doll's quilt.

With my dd, I cut out the squares and she did the sewing. I then did the quilting for her and put on the binding. Next we went to a simple nine-patch and she made a bit bigger quilt (for her cat). Now she is almost finished a simple nine patch for her own bed. Once she is finished sewing the borders, she will be starting on a log cabin quilt.

She is going to LOVE you. She asked for her own sewing machinge for Christmas, lol. But hubby and I thought she was too young to use it. But she is pretty responsible for 6, but didn't think she was old enough.

I have a panel of material with little quilt squares I have given her, I think I will cut it up and let her sew it together.

HUGS and thanks for the advice..........woudl have never thought.
