Question What was your first project?

I am working on my first two now. One is a rail fence quilt wallhanging in burgandy, hunter green, and cream. The other is a small baby quilt with appliqued hearts (in different shades of purple) on white squares and purple border.

I'm curious to hear what others did for their first quilts.

My first project will also be a rail fence quilt. My second project will be 4 square. I want to do several of the blocks with pictures of my family for my DH to use on his truck, so we'll always be near. I saw one of these and thats why I am getting so interested in quilting.

My first quilting project was called "Trip Around The World" in different shades of blue. It's a beginner's pattern and my rug-braiding / quilting teacher got the instructions for it from one of the women's magazines. She had to modify it so that she would not be infringing on copyright laws, but it is easy to do! If I worked part-time, I could easily spend the spare time on my second quilt!

Red face Am I Going About This Wrong ?

I was planning on starting a quilt. MY first. I wasn't going to use any certain pattern. I had planned to cut assorted pieces of material , stitch together . Is this wrong ? Am I just going to run into a mess ? I had wanted to make one with assorted material cut into squares . Then , another with assorted scraps of material from family [ have scraps of clothing from several generations.. back to gr.-gr. grandparents]... this probably would not be cut in uniform shapes or sizes.
Also, is there a certain type of material that is best for the backing ?
Please tell me if I'm heading for a mess.
    Thank you
    Cathy

My first project was a little pink calico doll quilt.

I just put two pieces of fabric together with some white material for batting (wasn't gonna waste real batting on a doll quilt ), added pink binding and diagonal-quilted it.

My first full-size quilt was a Ragged Quilt. Turned out pretty nice.

My first full-size pieced quilt is still under construction.

I am currently working on my first project. I'm doing a charm stars pattern in a wall hanging/crib size. I'm doing all hand-piecing so it's taking me forever it seems!

The first quilt I made was of a pattern I saw in a magazine (Family Circle or such) that I made for my sister as a christmas gift. It wasn't very big, lap sized if I recall, and I knew nothing about quilting. I just recently told her I'd like to see it again just to see how badly it looks because it was my first attempt I don't have the magazine anymore, and don't even know what the name of the pattern was! It was something like a rail fence but with small rectangles.

My first project was a quilted baby bib -- something small. I worked on it, while waiting for my grandfather to have surgery.

My first ones was a denim and corduroy star quilt. I'd made and finished 2 twin size (1 for each kid) and then made a queen size that never got a back to it! I still have it packed away somewhere!

My first quilt was a 6 block sampler quilt that I made through a quilting class. The first quilt I made on my own was a split rail fence baby quilt for one of my goddaughters.

My first quilting project was a stocking for my daughter. Something small so if I messed up it would only be a small mess. It turned out great!!
