Arrow Need color advice for a quilt I'm starting...

Here is a picture of the quilt I want to make for my brother's wedding. I want to use white where they use the tan marbling. Which color combinations would you do for the other colors?

I was thinking of doing navy and a lighter blue or hunter and a lighter green, but I am also thinking I need to get out of the "same color but different hue" rut.

    LOL

There are a couple of ways I would do it.

    - with blacks and whites

    - with hunter greens and beiges.

My first pick would be blacks and whites. I know many people don't use black and whites in a quilt, but I made one for one of my older kids and they loved it.

Where the beiges are in the picture, I would use a white with a design on it. Where the plaids are I would use a solid black, but one that again has a design on it. Where the small colored blocks are, I would use a white and black print, with white being the predominant color and with a black design or print in the white.

For the border around each block, I would use a solid black. Then I would find a piece of material that is border material in a black with a dark royal blue or dark purple design in it. There are many wonderful border materials out there now. I would then finish it off with a solid black border.

tip - draw out the pattern on a piece of paper. Do 2 or 3 blocks. Color them in as to how you would like it and see if it appeals to you. Look at it close up and from far away. You then will get the general picture of what the blocks will look like.

tip #2 - once you've decided on the material and your making the block, before you sew the block up, always lay the block out on a large ruler or piece of cardboard. Place it on your left side where your sewing. Sew each row from top to bottom and check, double check, triple check how your laying your blocks.

tip #3 - make a sample block with the colors your using. Pin it in front of your on the wall. It will help you keep all the blocks in order when sewing. I've done this a number of times, especially when the lay-out is one similar to the one you want to do.

Hope you don't mind these few tips. It just makes it easier and you have a lot less frustration and don't have to use the seam ripper so often.

Thanks for the suggestions and tips CJ. I will need to sit down and really think about what you're suggesting for colors. For some reason, I am very visual and need to draw a picture of what you're suggesting in order to understand it.

Eileen, my brother's favorite color is black, and I'm not sure what his fiancee's favorite colors are. I wanted to do mostly white since it's a wedding quilt, but I will play around with other colors too.

I think maybe a light beige and greens would look nice and be fairly neutral as well.

    Thanks again
