Guess What I Found!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so very excited! I was feeling kinda depressed again today so I went out to the shed where my MIL's cedar chest is. Before she died she was trying to refinish it and since there wasn't room for it in the house we have left it out there for 5 years now.
It is full of hers and dh's and bil's baby things. There were two old baby quilts with sunbonnet sue on them but they are both tattered so guess she kept them for sentimental value but as a beginning quilter I now have something to look at to see exacting how they are done and the size of Sue is perfect.
She also crocheted and made lots of doilies and did some needlepoint. Most of the needlepoint is horribly stained. Also the linen table clothes and a set of bath towels is badly stained but there is one set of bath towels that are in great condition and a beautifull yellow table cloth and napkins from Austria that is in a plastic package and not stained at all. Most of this stuff is 47 to 70 years old.
Also I found dh's cub scout shirt, id badge, silver utensils and confirmation certificate. These are cool things to me as I don't have stuff like that from my childhood. Dh's brother has already said he wants nothing from his past and to throw all of his stuff away but I'm keeping dh's for ds and his family to be.
BUTTTTTT......the greatest find was a completely hand sewn quilt! It is 82" x 67". It is made from 15" squares of solid color and 15" squares which are sewn from 2 1/2" squares. Does that make since? Wish I had a camera.
The 2 1/2" squares are red, blue, pink, yellow, red, green, navy blue and white muslin. The big 15" squares are teal. It has a tea stained color of muslin as the backing.
It's just gorgeous! Only problem is, I don't know who made it. Dh's grandma might have but she died several years ago. His Aunt is still living so I think I will ask her if she knows where it came from. I just wish who ever made it had signed it. I really don't think MIL made it as she was more into crafting and painting for years and I can't imagine her sitting still long enough to quilt.
Anyway. I just had to share my find with you all who are quilters as I know you will know the joy I am feeling and the fact that I just can't stop looking at it, lol.
What a great day it has turned out to be.
