    Definitely not a stupid question!

It's a piece of material that is 18 x 24" in dimension (larger by a bit in Canada, though I don't remember exactly what it is)

The fabric is cut off the bolt with the bolt running laterally vs. vertically, so you end up with a wider piece of fabric. It's a quarter yard, but cut the wide way (if you bring a bolt to a cutting counter and ask for 1/4 yd of fabric, your cut piece will be 9 x 44/45"--typically. If you buy a fat quarter, it's still a quarter of a yard, but it's 18 x 24" instead)

I'm rambling, and I'm not sure if I'm making much sense...LOL hard to describe stuff like this in writing rather than just eplaining it in person.

Oooooooh and Chelle forgot to explain that quilters drool over them, want more of them, will go without just to purchase them. They are known to call quilter's by name when you go into a quilting store, and are known to call quilters when you walk past a quilting store.

They are the firs thing quilters look for when in a quilting store and the last thing that quilters fondle when leaving the store. When quilters get home, they are known to hide them so that no one else knows about how many you've just purchased (that being dh/so).

They are on every quilter's wishlist and some quilters even dream about them.

Yup, us quilters really do like them.

btw - they are 23 x 20 inches sq. in Canada, only because our metre is a bit longer than your yard. BUT most Canadian stores sell them the same size as the US stores.

And poor CJ has so many fat quarters that she has to stay away from buying new ones for a while.
