    Exclamation Quilting tip #17

    How to tell whether material is 100% or poly/cotton blend, especially if your using old material or clothing to make a quilt.

    Do this over the sink - Take a small piece of fabric and burn the corner of the fabric. Make sure you don't burn yourself. The fabric may burn quickly, so blow it out quickly.

    Once burnt, 100% cotton fabric has a soft edge with gray ash. Poly/cotton material has a crispy feel to its edge. If the material has lots of poly in it, you'll often see a "bead" on the edge where the poly has melted.
