Would you recommend taking a quilting class or just read the books?
I have material, a sheet for backing, batting, a cutting board, one of those razor thingys and 4 sewing machines. (I inherited some).
I can sew, have made lots of clothes but my dream is to actually make a quilt. I have no use for lap quilts so that would be a waste of time and material to me. I want to start off with a quilt for my ds. It would need to be for a queen size bed so I know he can always use it where ever he goes. I want to do the most simple pattern there is so I don't get discouraged.
Now how do I get started. What would you recommend? Anyone?

I am making my first quilt all by reading books. I am doing a Charm Stars pattern (you can find it in Quick and Easy Scrap Quilts by Patricia Wilens). I looked at some Debbie Mumm books before starting and found the instructions helpful and I have another book, That perfect Stitch: The Secrets of Fine Hand Quilting, that's great for teaching you how to quilt.
As far as easy patterns, I have been told a Nine Patch is a really good beginner pattern. Here's a link.......

I am new to quilting too, and I have been visiting websites and reading books to learn. My mom is also an avid quilter and has been for at least 15 yrs. She's my mentor
I would recommend reading as much as you can, and give it a shot. If you have an opportunity to take a class, I think you should. You will not only learn a lot but also make friends with whom you already have something in common.
Keep us posted on your progress, and good luck!

I just thought of another pattern that you might enjoy doing - I actually hope to make one of these myself someday. It's a ragg quilt. Here's a link to one on the JoAnn site - it's called a Ragged Homespun quilt (it's a long link so you may have to copy and paste it into your browser to get it to work).....

I'm not a quilter but I have watched my grandma make a lot of them. I would say if you have basic sewing knowledge then a book should be sufficient. Good Luck!

ROFL!!!!!! Heck - I don't even have that! I have just kind of made it up as I go (the only thing I've done before now is sew on a button). One of my friends who loves to sew (machine sewing only) took a look at my blocks and said they turned out great.
