What patterns would you choose?
We hadn't seen our grandkids for many years and just this past week had the chance to visit them. I promised each of them a quilt, but having not seen them for so long, I don't really know them that well.
The 14 year old (boy) wants his in black.
The 12 year old (boy) wants his in dark green.
The 11 year old (girl) wants hers in sky blue
What patterns would you use if you were in the same situation? And what color would you use with the black. I don't want to make an all black quilt and I don't want to use white with the black. Give me some ideas please.

Not that I know what I'm talking about but I like this quilt for the 14 year old and think black and blue or black and silver or a combo of those. http://www.quilterscache.com/S_U/ShadedTrailBlock.html It looks like a complicated one tho.
Bet you had a wonderful visit.

Carolyn, thats the problem. Remember I haven't had any contact with the kids for 5 years, so its a guessing game for me.
I've picked "Starry Night" which is in Quick and Easy Scrap Quilts for my granddaughter.
Its the boys I need to figure out.

I really like this bandana quilt. You could find black bandanas and denim.

It's not "fancy", but I think a teen would love it.If you'd like to help support Frugal Living by Sara Noel, my syndicated column, e-mail, write, or call the managing editor at your local newspaper and ask them to publish it in print or online. I did a crochet afghan for my oldest who requested black-- I used several tones of gray, black, a bit of white.
I think guys might like the Roman strips quilts, or Bear Paw's quilts.

When my nephew was 15, my sister made a green and black quilt for him. He was mad for his Irish ancestry at the time so it was mostly black with green shamrocks. She also found a small silver irish medal in an antique store and sewed that into the pattern. That quilt was widely praised.
I know nothing about quilt patterns but I do know colours. I'd go for grey, blue, purple or green with black. With the green I'd do a lighter green, blue, burgandy or off white.
I'd find out what their interests are and reflect their interest in the quilt.

For a boy, I like the Midnight Stars quilt in Quick and Easy Scrap Quilts.
I love the suggestion of using teal with black.
