    Default quilting stitch

    I have read book after book and web site after web site and i have given up. When doing the quilting stitch do I go through all 3 layers or just the first 2?????

    To answer your question, all 3 layers. the purpose of quilting something is not only decorative, it is to hold the quilt all together. HTH

    Dee is right, whether hand quilting or machine quilting, you need to go through all 3 layers.

    Ellise, yes you can. Either use your sewing machine or hand quilt. If you don't, you'll find when the quilt is washed the batting will bunch up and you'll have it in some spots and not in others.

    Just so you know, when you start quilting a quilt you need to pin it, starting from the center and working out. Its exactly the same way when you quilt it, you work from the center out. Even if you hand tied it, you still need to work from the center out.

    Also, make sure your backing is about 5 inches wider that your quilt top (on all sides). When your quilting, the backing tends to shrink.
