Cj - This is a novice question - How do you know which fabrics you want where - do you picture it in your mind's eye? I am having a heck of a job placing fabrics - I cut out some and place them and I don't like how they interact. help...

Kimmee, the absolute best way to find what fabrics go well together is to find one fabric that draws your eye. In this quilt, its the printed one with the flowers. I've had that piece of material for almost 6 years. It called me immediately when I went into the quilting store. Then pull out colors from that piece of material. Use your "print" material as your focal point with the other colors enhancing that piece of print material. Thats the best way.
Another way is to get a color wheel and see what colors go well together.
Another way is to pick out 5 different pieces of material you think go well together. Place them on top of each other and step back. You'll immediately notice which color doesn't fit. Unless your making a scrappy quilt, you usually don't use more than 5 or 6 colors in a quilt.
I've found a few other ways which are unconventional and never mentioned in quilting books. Go to furniture stores and look at their displays. They are beautifully color co-ordinated. You'll see art work on the wall and everything matches. That will help you see what colors go well together.
Go into clothing stores (ladies perferably) and look at how clothing is put together with accessories. That again will show you how to use colors together.
If your making a scrappy quilt, trust the material to go well together. Its amazing how colors you never thought would go together, once in a quilt work wonderfully.
Take risks when quilting. Make one block and see how it looks. If you don't think it works, take it apart or set it aside for another quilt. I have found though that most colors, once in a quilt work wonderfully. (Well unless you put an orange in with a burgundy!!!!)

This is one corner of the wall hanging. I one large triangle is a bit wrinkled (it will be pressed next picture).
The large triangles are cut from a block 27 x 27 inches wide. I do not have a ruler that large (must look into that after the end of Jan.), so I asked dh if he had anything that I could use. All his rulers were 24 inches wide. When I was delivering papers, the papers were wrapped in plain white paper and I had given them to the kids for drawing on. I taped a couple of them together and then measured out a block 27 x 27 inches. I then cut the block in 4 as the instructions said. Viola, I had a template that cost nothing and worked perfect. Once the quilt is done, I will need to trim the little extra around the whole quilt.
