Has anyone made a denim quilt?
I am slowely learning to use my new sewing machine. My 11 yr old son has learned he really likes to sew! He made his brothers toy do a hoodie sweat shirt. We were reading a story last night about a family making a quilt. We though a denim quilt would be cool. I don't have alot of ald jeans but I figure we could buy some at thrift shops yard sales etc.
Has anyone done this. Can you tell me what were getting in to?~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

I haven't done it but have been saving dh's old work jeans for ever to do it. I'm sure I have enough for at least 2 quilts. I've seen one that was cut of about 6 inch squares and sewn so that the frayed edges were on the top of the quilt. I loved that one. I don't think it will be hard at all.

I did one with 12 inch squares.. It was too heavy to use as a blanket and I never put a backing on it. We use it for picnics......
I don't sew at all and it was pretty easy.....

Make sure that your sewing machine is heavy duty enough to sew denim and always wear glasses of some kind when you are sewing on them. I've had many needles break off and go flying while sewing denim.
I had saved a bunch of jeans to make the dogs a quilted bed but I finally tossed them as I had too much clutter and too many projects to do.
I really think they are gorgeous and I never thought of using the denim quilt as a picnic or car quilt so maybe I will save some again and try that. Also, your idea of getting them at yard sales and thrift stores is a great one and really the way to go.
However, I think for a family quilt you would be much happier with some cotton or broadcloth that is colored like denim. It would be easier to sew and lighter.
Just my opinion and have fun!
