    They are used for quilting. A quilter has a much wider variety of matierlal if they purchase fat quarters.

    It is a 'quarter' (1/4) of a yard of fabric, which would only be 9" long. So a 'fat quarter' is actually a 1/2 yard of fabric cut in 2 up the middle. Which gives you more choices of cuts to do for a block you are making. If you only had 9" in length of fabric, you couldn't make a strip 10" x 20" but you can when you get a 'fat quarter'.
