Question When quilting, do you often think of your foremothers

Often I wonder about our foremothers and their quilting, how they must have enjoyed their quilting bees, getting together with friends, sharing laughter, tears and how the farm was doing. I'm sure they would bring baking, have a potluck and such.

I wonder where they would have found their material and why they made the patterns they did, simple/plain and yet so beautiful.

The stitching in older quilts is to behold and I wonder how young a girl was when she first started quilting. Did she enjoy it or was it just something that was expected, whether she liked it or not. (Course who doesn't like quilting.)

I wonder about how they found time to quilt with all that they had to do. Survival was utmost in their minds and yet, they produced quilts that are still around today.

Do you ever think of this when quilting?

I think of my grandmother when I am working on a quilt. I wish now that I had wanted to learn how to quilt years ago when she was still alive and able to quilt so she could have taught me. She made some very pretty ones, mostly from scraps of clothes and such that she had.

Both my mother and paternal grandmother used to make quilts. Some of their quilts were made out of clothes that their kids had outgrown. My mother used to quilt in the afternoons after lunch and the dishes were done. At one time she used a quilting frame that hung from the ceiling. When she finished quilting, she would roll it up out of the way. She would quilt just about any time of the year. Later on my brother made her a quilting frame that could be taken apart and put away. My grandmother would piece tops during the summer and quilt them in the winter. Quilting is such a relaxing way to spend time. The time goes by so fast when you are quilting. To me it's a great stress reliever.

Sure do. I wish it was still more of a community thing. I prefer to quilt with others

I think about the women that taught me. She was 90. I had never sewn before and she taught me to hand sew and machine sew her a whole new warbrobe. lol  But as we would sew she would tell me stories of her life. It always filled my heart.

I'll be the odd one out and say no, I never think of our foremothers quilting while I am. I just enjoy making something out of a few pieces of fabric.

Yes I do. I don't have anyone in my family that quilted. I think about older generations of ladies gathering toghether. I also think about long winters and how the quilts were really all they had to keep warm at night.
