    Default question about denim quilts

although I have made several quilts over the years, I really need everyone's thoughts on this:
I am planning on making a denim quilt-from left-over jeans scraps- (never made one from denim before) & I want to use flannel for the back.
My question is...since the denim & flannel are thick anyway, would you still recommend that I use something for a quilt gut? Or do you think that just the 2 layers (denim & flannel) would be enough? Thanks for your input

I made a bunch of those -- probably about 20 before I finally decided I'd had enough last year. After the first one I always bought a cheap acrylic (non-thermal) blanket (the $5 - $10 ones) and used that to replace both the batting and the backing. The jean seams are so bulky I think it would be kind of lumpy bumpy on the back if you used just regular weight backing with nothing in between.

Of course if you are making a "rag quilt" I really don't think it would matter. I wrote a tip sheet on jean quilts years ago. If you are interested I can see if I can find it.

The denim and the flannel will make a very warm and heavy quilt. I don't think it is necessary to put any type of batting between the two. I've made a couple of rag quilts with denim and flannel, they turn out great and everyone loves them!

I have one that my aunt made years ago and she didnt to put anything in it. The front in denim and the back is 100% cotton. IT is plenty heavy and its my entire families favorit. We argue over it but I win becuase its mine!

I actually put batting in mine. But we live in a cold climate and a cold house, so it's really appreciated. I made one for each child. I just used the regular cotton batting and tied the quilt.
